New Toyota recall involves 516,000 vehicles worldwide

(May 23, 2014) Toyota said Thursday it will recall 516,000 vehicles worldwide in three new campaigns for rust, air bag and brake pedal issues.

The automaker said it will recall 2004-2011 Sienna minivans sold or registered in several states that use road salt. The spare tire could fall off if a cable rusts. It affects 450,000 Siennas worldwide and 370,000 in the U.S. Until a fix is ready, dealers will relocate the spare to the luggage compartment.

Toyota also is recalling 50,000 Highlander and Highlander hybrid SUVs. Because of a glitch in the air bag electronic control unit, the air bag may only deploy at the low-speed setting no matter what size the passenger is. The low-speed setting is intended for a small passenger.

Toyota is also recalling 10,500 2013 Lexus GS 350 sedans in the U.S., 16,000 worldwide, because of a brake problem. A sensing switch that allows the brake system to detect brake-pedal force could apply the brakes without the driver touching the pedal. That could result in unexpected moderate deceleration.

Toyota said it is not aware of accidents, injuries or fatalities caused by the three recall issues.
