Gilmore Car Museum will teach you how to drive a Ford Model T
(May 7, 2020) HICKORY CORNERS, Mich. — The Gilmore Car Museum is offering classes in how to drive a Ford Model T. The "Model T Driving Experience" will be held every week starting on Sunday, June 21, and running through Oct. 10. Interested people are advised to visit the museum's web site at www.gilmorecarmuseum.org from time to time to determine if events remain scheduled because of the COVID-19 crisis.
Participants will learn the art of driving the Model T in one of the museum's fleet of vintage vehicles built between 1908 and 1927. The drive will be staged on three miles of paved roads within the museum grounds and with an experienced instructor.
The museum states that this will be "a fun and memorable hands-on experience that's perfect for multi-generational family groups, couples, or anyone who wants to take a step back in time and learn how the drive, or get a refresher, in one of the 15 million 'Tin Lizzies' built by the Ford Motor Company over 100 years ago."
Gilmore Museum experts will teach: use of park and throttle control levers, coordination of hand and foot controls, proper shifting techniques, stopping the vehicle, correct use of the neutral/brake lever, reversing the car, and the starting basics.
In addition, all students will receive an historian-guided tour of the Museum Collection with lessons on Henry Ford and how the Model T changed the world; a souvenir Model T booklet produced exclusively for the Gilmore Museum, admission to the entire museum for a day; and a certificate of completion suitable for framing.
Check the Gilmore web site for days and time. Cost is $115 per person.
