Fiesta world tour at halfway point

(October 3, 2010) So what’s a good road trip without a little belly dancing, a few camels, and a few photos of the Dead Sea? It’s all part of the Fiesta World Tour, and the best part is there’s more to come. It’s only halfway through its around-the-world journey.

“The Fiesta World Tour is pushing the limits of adventure,” said Sam De La Garza, Fiesta brand manager. “Adventure is what the Fiesta is all about.”

Consider the World Tour the ultimate road trip with a goal of 15,000 miles, designed to celebrate the global nature of one of Ford’s most fun-to-drive vehicles. It started in California, headed east through Canada and has wandered through Europe and the Middle East, just now hitting its halfway point. With a group of journalists behind the wheel, the two-car road trip has become more of an experience than a drive.

“Fiesta evokes an instant emotional response that says ‘I want one,’ regardless of where you are in the world,” said Sal Campolo, Ford of Europe brand manager. “That’s what makes Fiesta a global success for Ford and the perfect car for a world road trip.”

A few of the adventures along the way have included:

    • An adrenaline rush courtesy of the Nurburgring in Germany, a historic Formula One racetrack considered one of the most challenging courses in the world.

    • Some quality time with a few camels, which, incidentally, are known as the “Ships of the Desert,” because of their ability to go without food and water for days. There was still plenty of time, though, to check out the incredible views of the Dead Sea – the lowest place on Earth.

    • Breathtaking views of the immense cliffs of the Grand Canyon, which show what a few Ice Ages can do to a little bit of land.

    • A perfect definition of “I don’t know if it’s art, but I like it”: Watching a “dirty-car artist” create a drawing of two Texas longhorn cattle on the back of one of the Fiestas.

    • Entertainment that included belly dancing and comedy of Istanbul’s “best taxi driver,” who led the convoy into Asia as it crossed the bridge with 18 Turkish Fiesta owners.

“So far, we’ve covered 7,000 miles from Los Angeles, and a small ding from valet parking is the only battle scar we’ve endured after driving for a month across two continents,” said Jeremy Hart, expedition leader. “We’ve taken the cars from 125 degrees Fahrenheit to the lowest places on Earth. They’ve even gone over the roof of Europe through the Alps and driven at speeds of 210 km/h on the autobahn.”

As Ford Fiesta is reaching its one millionth sale, Fiesta owners can get in on the fun by submitting photos of themselves with their car to the Ford Fiesta Facebook page at www.facebook.com/fordfiesta. Fans can vote on their favorite images, and the most popular will be chosen to be included in “Fiesta: Road to One Million” collage on Facebook.
