Bentley says its new Bentayga will be fastest SUV in the world

(September 5, 2015) Bentley claims its all-new Bentayga sport utility vehicle coming in 2016 is the fastest SUV in the world when outfitted with the W-12 engine. Rumors have it that the Bentayga can hit 200 mph. So now Bentley says the SUV has been clocked in testing at "an undisclosed location" at 301 km/h, which translates to 187 miles per hour.

That's not quite 200, but good enough to crown the Bentayga as Bentley has described it,  "the fastest, most powerful SUV in the world" when outfitted with "the most technically advanced 12-cylinder in the world." The 6.0-liter engine delivers 600 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque.

The 187 mph track speed reached by the Bentayga is 11 mph faster than the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and 25 mph faster than the Range Rover Sport SVR.

Bentley says the Bentayga delivers the best combination of power and torque efficiency of any car in its class.

Bentley has released a short teaser film "Bentayga: Exploring the Limits of Performance" to put an explanation point on its statements.

The newest Bentley is expected to be the ultimate luxury car company's volume leader and should begin to reach dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2016. The Bentayga is a key part of parent company Volkswagen’s plan to boost Bentley’s sales to 15,000 vehicles annually by 2018. The company's global deliveries were a record 11,020 cars last year, and Bentley has said it expects to sell about 3,000 SUVs a year.

The Bentayga will also come with a base V-8 engine and is likely to start at more than $200,000.

The Bentayga will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month.
