Edmunds.com names 1963 Corvette 'best of all time'

(January 12, 2013) SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The 1963 Corvette fuel-Injected coupe tops the list of the Best Corvettes of All Time, according Edmunds.com. The second-generation Corvette heads the list because, says Edmunds.com, it's "one of the most alluring automotive designs ever conceived."

"What really made this car great was that it set the standard for every subsequent Corvette," says Edmunds.com editor in chief Scott Oldham. "And more than a half-century after this model's debut, Corvette continues to be the iconic standard for American sports cars."

Edmunds.com compiled its list in anticipation of the new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette, scheduled to debut Sunday night at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new Corvette will represent the seventh generation for the brand, and is expected to include a fully redesigned interior with new seats and more luxurious materials. Just last month, Edmunds.com published spy shots of the 2014 Corvette's dramatic new shape.

Other models making the list of Edmunds.com's Best Corvettes of All Time include:

    • 2009 Corvette ZR1 — The first Corvette to carry a six-figure price tag, Edmunds.com calls this "the fastest, most capable Corvette ever built."
    • 1997 Corvette C5 — Edmunds.com says that the C5 "was the first Corvette that was as comfortable crossing the country as dicing for position on a racetrack."
    • 1953 Corvette — When the first Corvette debuted at the GM Motorama in New York City on Jan. 17, 1953, it was an instant sensation. Based on crowd reaction, Chevrolet immediately ordered the Corvette into production. And 300 examples of the new 1953 Corvette were hurriedly built — all painted Polo White.
