(March 1, 2022) The BMW 2-series is the German automakers entry-level-two-door with the 2022 model year introducing an all-new generation for the model. For 2022 the 2 Series is offered in two completely different cars — the front-wheel drive Gran Coupe, a four-door sedan, the other a rear-wheel drive two-door coupe with all-wheel drive optional tested here.

Our test 230i coupe was powered by a 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline 4-cylinder engine that delivers 255-horsepower and an 8-speed automatic transmission. A convertible body style along with a manual shifting transmission are both gone for 2022. A more performance oriented 382-hp straight-six-cylinder M240i offering will be made available later this year and adds the Dynamic Handling and M Sport packages optional along with bigger 19-inch wheels on sport tires, firmer suspension tweaks, bigger brakes and of course unique visual performance treatments.

The previous generation 2 Series had an arguably polarizing body style with its oversized rear windows and short rear deck, and enormous front grille. We think the new styling is a revelation with a modern style refresh including the new vertical air flap grille that opens in ten stages to improve aerodynamics and engine cooling. Headlights are new with U-shaped running lights and integrated turn signals. Out back are new aggressive-angular taillights and a restyled trunk, roofline and huge dual exhaust openings.

Inside, the design language is classic BMW with premium materials and excellent build quality. It doesn’t break any new ground but does upgrade with the brands pervasive styling and layout.

Infotainment, connectivity and tech systems operate via the standard 8.8-inch touchscreen along with steering-wheel controls and voice commands. There’s a rotary controller on the center console that’s surrounded with helpful shortcut buttons for operations. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, HiFi sound system, navigation with Real-Time traffic and on-street parking tech all standard.

On the road our test 230i delivered everything we love about BMW’s dynamic and sporty driving handling with aplomb thanks to its quick and accurate steering, precision handling and braking, along with its adaptive suspension and selectable driving modes to change the character of suspension and steering with choices from Comfort up to Sport Plus. Depending on driver’s preference.

Overall, the new 2-series improves upon everything we liked about the previous generation and more. This is traditional BMW at its best in an affordable compact package
