AUSTIN, Texas — I first heard about the Veloster back in 2012 when Hyundai initially launched the quirky little hatchback, and the name reminded me of a carnival ride. “Weird name for a car,” I thought. Fast forward to May 2018, when Hyundai fittingly introduced the second generation 2019 Veloster to the media in Austin, a city that takes immense pride in proclaiming itself the weirdest city in the country (although Portland, Ore., takes exception to that claim).

(May 14, 2018) Nearly 50 years ago, Scottish musicians Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan wrote and released a song called “Stuck in the Middle with You,” performed by their band Stealers Wheel. It sold over a million copies, eventually peaking at number six on the Billboard charts. Since then a lot has been written about the meaning of the lyrics: there’s a lot of stuff going on around you and you can go either way, trying to make sense of it all.

(April 30, 2018) Just over two years ago, Toyota announced it was killing off the Scion brand, which launched in 2003 hoping to attract trendy youthful buyers to the Toyota family.  By the end of 2016, Scion was toast and Toyota saw fit to rebadge the small, sporty FR-S as the Toyota 86. The diminutive iA became a Yaris subcompact sedan and the Scion iM hatchback became the Corolla iM hatchback.

(April 26, 2018) A popular suburban mainstay of crossover utility vehicles, the Audi Q5 luxury SUV first came on the scene following its North American debut in 2009. The Q5 received a refresh in 2012 and now, for 2018, comes the second-generation with a complete revamp that includes more technology, advanced driver assistance systems, a redeveloped powertrain, and modest exterior design treatments. So modest, in fact, only those with an educated eye will spot the difference.

(April 23, 2018) Last fall, I had the opportunity to drive Nissan’s first go at semi-autonomous driving with the launch of the all-new 2018 Leaf and introduction of ProPILOT Assist. This new technology beat the Leaf to dealer showrooms with the 2018 Nissan Rogue SL, the model tested here and, the only other Nissan model offered with the technology. The benefit and intent of ProPILOT Assist is to ease the driver’s workload by reducing the amount of acceleration, steering and braking effort, thus mitigating driver fatigue.

(April 12, 2018) For 2018, Honda’s excellent subcompact hatchback, the third-generation five-door subcompact Fit, undergoes a substantial mid-cycle freshening, including the addition of a new Sport trim tested here.

It slots between the existing base LX trim and up-market EX trim level. Regardless of trim level, all Fit models get an updated infotainment system, and greater availability of Honda’s Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver assistive technologies.
