Ford Mustang Dark Horse a sure winner on or off track

(June 2, 2024) In racing, a “dark horse” is a long shot not expected to win a race but nevertheless retains some chance for success such as Mystik Dan, who went into this year’s Kentucky Derby saddled with 18-1 odds but nosed out the other 19 competitors at the wire. When it comes to cars, however, there is nothing long shot about the Dark Horse edition of the 2024 Ford Mustang. It is a pure winner, a real thoroughbred among performance coupes.

2024 Subaru Solterra

HERNDON, Va. — If you weren’t aware that Subaru had been offering a dedicated battery electric (BEV) for most of the past two years, you’re not alone. The Subaru Solterra, sharing a platform with the equally anonymous Toyota bZ4Z, has received little attention from Subaru’s marketing execs, and even less attention — if that’s possible — from the buying public.

Hyundai Santa Fe — Dramatic redesign

(June 2, 2024) Almost everybody who looked at this Earthy Brass Matte-painted crossover wondered what the “H” it was — and that was even after they saw the “H” emblem on it. Yes, it is a Hyundai, but nothing like most of the recent designs to come out of the company with big stylized chrome or gloss black grills, stacked low-mounted headlights and faceted, curved flanks on fairly streamlined shapes.

Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport — Big on room, short on sport

(May 26, 2024) A mantra ever present in Volkswagen's branding of its huge Atlas SUV is the common refrain: "Built in America, for Americans." Offering the Atlas in either three-row or two-row seat configurations like the Cross Sport reviewed here, Volkswagen makes it perfectly clear the vehicle is targeted squarely at families looking for interior room, a road presences and an attractive sleek and sloping roof vehicle whose price won't bust the budget.

2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2

MIAMI — For a 10-year period that ended late last year, Chevrolet urged us to “Find New Roads” in its advertising. Maybe they changed it because with vehicles like the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison pickup you don’t need to bother finding any roads, let alone new ones, to get where you want to go.

2024 Subaru’s BRZ tS

HERNDON, Va. — To paraphrase singer Deniece Williams (briefly) and the Footloose soundtrack, LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE BOYS! Regardless of the auto industry’s recent efforts at gender diversity (and there are many), a tightly drawn 2+2 with a horizontally opposed four and manual trans could only have been executed by a small, brief outpouring of testosterone.

(May 12, 2024) If you are looking for a three-row SUV to meet the needs of your family perhaps the Hyundai Palisade should reside at or very near the top of your shopping list. Hyundai's mid-sized three-row crossover, which was introduced for the 2020 model year, offers a near-perfect blend of utility, value, performance and luxury at a good price and with an extraordinarily long warranty.

2024 Dodge Hornet R/T

HERNDON, Va. — Even if your only automotive news comes from your daily newspaper, you’d know it’s a moment of upheaval for the auto industry. After so much attention given to the EV — and Mister Elon Musk — by the mass media, excitement around battery electrification seems to have cooled. To be sure, people are still buying electrified vehicles, but interest in all-electric has hit a plateau, while hybrids and plug-in hybrids are in greater demand.
