Genesis GV70 — Learning to love the new Genesis

(January 5, 2022) I am a big fan of Genesis, but was not loving its new GV70 compact crossover from photos. The swoopy rear windowline and bubble rump didn’t look especially menacing, even if the rear echoes the classic Porsche 928. It looked handsome enough from the front with its car-grater grille, but nothing special against others in its class. Then, this sinister beast with flat gray paint appeared and I got an attitude adjustment.

(January 9, 2022) With electrification rapidly taking over our driving life, this might be the best time to enjoy massive horsepower and insane performance from an internal combustion engine. It may never get any better — as long as you have the cash to explore the world of monster ICE performance. And our current example is not only breathtakingly fast, but it offers a large dose of practicality.

(January 2, 2022) I know of no data that will back this up but it has been my experience over the last 20 years that automakers pay more attention to updating the higher trims on their models than they do on their entry level vehicles, though many of the features introduced on the top trim eventually trickle their way down through the lineup. Kia, however, seems to be taking a different approach with the newest Stinger.

(December 26, 2021) There’s no question that Cadillac utility vehicles — XT4, XT5, XT6 and flagship Escalade — are the brand’s cash cows as consumers flock to them, foregoing traditional sedans. So why has Cadillac just released two new high-performance super sedans designed to take on the powerhouse four-door brutes from BMW and Mercedes? It’s simple – it builds brand awareness and showroom traffic.

Subaru Forester — Now with more off-road capability

(December 19, 2021) It seems every manufacturer has created a special trim level with a robust off-road look for their SUV lineup. Some of the special editions are for show only with exterior bits and pieces such as larger tires and body side moldings giving the vehicle additional driveway panache. There's nothing underneath the skin to back up the trail-rated looks. But other manufacturers are giving their vehicles not only a hardcore persona, but are backing it up with off-road equipment for "overlanding" duties that can take the occupants beyond the rutted fishing-hole road.

Ford Mustang convertible — Just in time arrival

(December 15, 2021) MIAMI — Back last September I had the opportunity to drive the Mustang Mach-E, Ford’s first all-electric vehicle. I gave it good marks for its range of up to 270 miles on a full charge and its overall performance. But I didn’t really consider it a Mustang.

2022 Mercedes E450 All-Terrain

INDIANAPOLIS — Mercedes-Benz had a pretty crazy strategy when it introduced the jacked-up All Terrain E-Class wagon in Europe, home of fast cars and faster highways, and left crossover-crazy America with the more boring Rodeo Drive version.  I mean, hadn’t they learned the basic lesson of the Subaru Outback?  Americans want to look ready for adventure whether they’re hitting the trails…or shopping mall.  Mercedes mends its ways with the 2022 E450 All Terrain.

Buick Encore GX — An attractive near-luxury sub-subcompact SUV

(December 12, 2021) The smallish sub-compact Buick Encore was introduced as a 2013 model to plug a hole at the bottom of Buick's growing sport utility lineup. It got a facelift in 2017 and sold in decent numbers. But the big news for the Encore was the introduction of the Encore GX, an all-new stretched version that turned the little crossover into a vehicle useable by families and empty nesters who liked the Encore, but yearned for adult-friendly second-row seating.

2022 Mini Cooper Convertible

MIAMI — Just as the word “dated” began to appear in reviews of the iconic Mini in recent years, the 2022 Mini Cooper Convertible arrives refreshed and updated but still with the sassy attitude that has been an integral part of its DNA for just over six decades. While still retaining its distinctive overall outer appearance, the 2022 Mini gets new bumpers front and rear, a revised grille and new wheel designs, and three new colors — Island Blue, Rooftop Grey and Zesty Yellow.
