Toyota Corolla Hybrid — Gas mileage champ

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The Toyota Corolla is an all-new compact sedan for 2020 — the 12th generation of what is regarded as the best-selling car of all time — with new styling inside and out and three drivetrain variants including a hybrid version that is EPA-rated at 52 mpg in combined city and highway driving.

2020 Nissan Versa

NASHVILLE — For two generations, the Nissan Versa held its own in the sub-compact car segment not with flashy styling nor lavish interiors, but with an affordable price, roomy cabin, and competent handling.  Priorities led to cars with tall/narrow profiles and interiors awash in hard plastic.  For 2020, the Versa arrives for its third generation keeping all owners appreciated while slapping on some fancy new clothes.

2020 Subaru Outback

SAN FRANCISCO — Subaru could have radically changed the Outback for 2020.  The design team explored options from super sleek wagons to upright crossovers that would make the proverbial outhouse look aerodynamic.  Yet, when they discussed what current and potential owners wanted, it was obvious the shape should look like, well, an Outback.

2020 Hyundai Palisade

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — For 2020, Hyundai has just introduced its all-new three-row mid-size SUV. The Palisade is basically the mechanical sibling to the impressive Kia Telluride, introduced earlier this year, and placing at the top of our SUV ratings. In addition to the Telluride, the new Hyundai flagship Palisade competes with class rivals such as Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Nissan Pathfinder.

2020 Range Rover plug-in

INDIANAPOLIS — It looks much like any other Range Rover.  It’s huge, with a big grille and streamlined bodysides that end in the model’s traditional trailing rear flanks.  Body color trim, LED headlamps, and 20” wheels give no clue to anything different.  It’s quite handsome in its bold Britishness, but looks like another Range Rover.  Squint your eyes to notice that big grille conceals a surprise.  Deftly hidden on the driver’s side is a door, behind which there’s a port for a power plug.  Yep, it’s a plug-in hybrid.

Kia Telluride — Big, bold and beautiful

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

It's big, bold, blocky and just a downright beautiful large sport utility crossover. We are speaking about the all-new first-time-out 2020 Kia Telluride. In fact, it's the biggest vehicle Kia has ever manufactured, nearly eight inches longer than its stablemate, the Sorento. Kia designers say it is "boxy on purpose" yielding more room on the inside.

Kia Soul — Delightfully quirky

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

More than a decade ago several sub-compact imports hit the marketplace defying classification. We called them boxes on wheels. The Honda Element and Scion xB in 2001 were among the first such vehicles to hit our shores followed by the Nissan Cube in 2009 and Kia Soul in 2010. They had charm and enormous interior space for their little size.

2020 Jeep Gladiator

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — It’s been 28 years since there’s been a Jeep-branded pickup, the Comanche, sold from 1986 through 1992. As one of the most highly anticipated new vehicles to launch in years the Gladiator finally arrives amid renewed interest in midsize pickups among the likes of Chevrolet Colorado, Toyota Tacoma, and Ford Ranger entries.

Mercedes GLE 450 — Hey Mercedes, you rule!

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Many people have come to rely on Amazon's Alexia in the home for instant information and to accomplish household functions. Mercedes Benz has one-upped Alexia and iPhone's Siri with its "Hey, Mercedes" voice command on the new MBUX information system now being equipped on its new cars and SUVs, including the new fourth-generation 2020 GLE 450 sport utility we tested.

Mazda CX-9 — At the top of its class

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Mazda introduced its second-generation three-row CX-9 crossover at just the right time in 2016 as the SUV market was exploding, and over the past four years it has performed quite well holding its own against the increasingly more sophisticated competition. Mazda's remake of the CX-9 in 2016 was startlingly good pushing the three-row crossover to the top of its class in terms of most things a buyer wants — three useable rows of seats, a healthy and fuel-efficient engine, a high-quality interior loaded with technology, the latest in safety equipment, an engaging driving experience, and styling that will turn heads.
