That color may not be your first choice, but we can say from our time behind the wheel of a Red Crystal Signature trim CX-9 that the striking red used across the Mazda spectrum will garner many thumbs up. One admiring senior citizen said it reminded him of the Candy Apple Red of past decades.

Mazda introduced its second-generation three-row CX-9 crossover at just the right time in 2016 as the SUV market was exploding, and over the past four years it has performed quite well holding its own against the increasingly more sophisticated competition. Prior to the 2018 refresh, the Mazda6 came with only one engine choice, a first-rate 2.5-liter 4-cylinder making 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Today’s base engine gets cylinder deactivation for 2018†that improves fuel economy now measured at 27 mpg city, 36 highway and 29 overall.
