BMW X4M Competition — Full-time attack mode

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

With electrification threatening to take over our driving life in the coming years, this might be the best time ever to enjoy massive horsepower and insane performance from internal combustion engines. It may never get any better — as long as you have the cash to explore the world of monster performance.

2020 BMW 740I

INDIANAPOLIS — BMW had some nerve when it introduced its flagship 7-Series back in 1977.  To even deign to compete with the dreadnought Mercedes-Benz S-Class took an end-loader full of, well, something extraordinary.  While Cadillac was content to offer over-fluffed Chevy Impalas, Lincoln built block-length cruisers, and Audi was still trying to out-live the Fox, BMW said, “You think you’re great, Mercedes?  I’ll have a whack at that!”  Six generations and over 40 years later, BMW may finally have hit its battleship.

BMW M850i convertible — Automotive nirvana

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Heads turn as you cruise by, top down, in the curvaceous 2019 BMW M850i convertible with its muscular haunches and sleek lines sitting on beautiful 20-inch wheels. It's hard to conceive that it gets any better than this in style, comfort and performance. We think it’s reaching automotive nirvana. The 850i is the epitome of modern BMW DNA styling starting with the slightly larger, familiar kidney-shaped grille and imposing air intakes up front and continuing to the sculpted LED taillight clusters in the rear.

2020 BMW 3 Series

MIAMI — BMW’s 3-Series has been around for over four decades, and now the German automaker has taken its so-called “entry” level luxury sedan to a new level. The 2020 M340i and M340i xDrive now in showrooms are the most powerful non-M 3 Series yet. With a 3.0-liter, 6-cylinder engine (382 horsepower, 369 pound-feet of torque), the M340i xDrive moves from zero-to-60 in 4.2 seconds.

BMW M5 — The pinnacle of sports sedans

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Being behind the wheel of the 2019 BMW M5 Competition had us in awe of its massive performance. It was a never-ending source of brute force with driving and handling proficiency in spades. The M5 is the ultimate companion for someone who is addicted to power, but needs comfortable room for four adults, a suitable commuter car, and a long-haul vacation vehicle.

BMW X7 — Going big and bold

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

It seems every automaker wants a full range of SUVs to satisfy our SUV/crossover crazed world. So it behooved BMW to build a full-sized sport utility — bigger than its mid-sized X5 — to compete with such luxury models as the Audi Q7, Lincoln Navigator and the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class. Enter the new South Carolina-built X7, which is BMW's largest SUV ever with a useable three rows of seating.

2019 BMW 330i

MIAMI — For over four decades, the BMW 3 Series has been considered to be the benchmark in the sport sedan segment as well as serving as the German automaker’s best-selling model. BMW reports that more than 15 million 3 Series models have been sold worldwide since it arrived in the U.S. in 1976 as a replacement for the iconic BMW 2002 sedan.

BMW M2 Competition — Driving thrills in a small package

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

While the popular BMW 3 Series has grown bigger and more expensive over the years, the German company known for its "ultimate driving machine" has filled the space once occupied decades ago by a smaller 3 Series with the compact 2 Series giving buyers the opportunity to purchase a smaller point-and-shoot fun-to-drive car.

Sold as a coupe or convertible, the 2 Series has been on the market since 2014 and now comes in two standard formats — the 230i with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the M240i with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder making 335 horsepower and 396 pound-feet of torque.

2019 BMW X2 xDrive28i

PHOENIX — The newest Bimmer in the German automakers lengthy lineup of luxury crossovers is the compact X2. It’s essentially a sportier, funkier, sleeker and slightly less roomy version of the company’s X1 subcompact crossover.
Joining the wildly popular entry-level luxury crossover segment, X2 offers the versatility of a hatchback with available all-wheel drive, an impressive looking cabin, and performance that results in a near perfect vehicle to satisfy even the most inflated car ownership expectations.

2018 BMW M5

MIAMI — You’ve no doubt heard the term “sports sedan” used to describe regular family cars that have enhanced performance characteristics, but did you know that the genre dates as far back as the 1930s? I confess I didn’t until I did a “Google” search (Is there any other kind?) and found it was first used in the 1930s to describe “sports saloon” versions of British-made Rover cars.
