Genesis G90 — Refined large luxury sedan

By David Finkelstein

Hyundai Motors America is broadening it's overall footprint with a new premium product mix by introducing the Genesis G90 flagship Luxury Sedan. This comfortable and refined vehicle has a starting price of $68,100. The G90 is engineered with global technologies and discriminating innovations so it can be cross-shopped with most of the vehicles in the exclusive luxury segment.

Powering the G90 is an all-new yet powerful 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. It's also available with a 5.0-liter V8 gasoline direct injection engine as well. It's manufactured in either rear-wheel-drive or with an all-wheel-drive chassis setup in order to meet various customers demands. Personally, I'm not 100% convinced that the AWD option is all important with a vehicle such as this!

One of the more notable cutting-edge features includes the industry’s first, Amazon Alexia Skill of which allows owners to send remote voice commands to the G90 through connected wireless services.

Similar to other Genesis vehicles, G90 takes affluence to a higher level with the ”Genesis Experience.” It's a comprehensive owner curriculum providing high-end customer assurance with enhanced maintenance programs and an industry-leading warranty. Of course, other manufactures of premium models also offer comparable courtesy services resembling “Genesis Experience.”

The G90's profile is both powerful and refined from the vehicle's notable and prominent hood, extruded wheelbase, minimized overhangs and from it's sophisticated rear deck assembly.

With athletic body proportions, it's aimed to show strength and originality. The front is easily identifiable with it's bold ‘CREST’ style grille and crowned with the winged Genesis badge emblem. The optional full-LED signature headlights (V8 model) flow from the fascia assembly to the front fenders. On the lower fascia, standard LED Daytime Running Lights add a distinctive illumination signature. A bold arcing character line spans the length of G90, accentuating the vehicle’s dynamic brawny profile. Tastefully added chrome elements also serve to create a premium appearance. The standard 19-inch alloy wheels further help with G90's contour.

In the rear, chrome dual asymmetrical exhaust outlet tips integrated in the lower bumper further help to complement the bright vertical LED taillights. The vehicles exterior color palette was deliberately well thought out. Six exclusive colors are offered including Casablanca White, Caspian Black, Manhattan Brown, Santiago Silver, London Gray and Patagonia Blue.

The interior design harmony begins with welcomed ergonomics coupled with the placement of operating controls that tend to seamlessly flow within the spacious cabin. Evidence of craftsmanship with precision stitching and premium materials further compliments the elegant and spaciousness interior of the G90. Occupants are surrounded by genuine wood accents and the leather-stitched instrument panel.

Added front seating comfort starts with the Ergo-design seating surfaces. This also includes an electronically-controlled, 22-way power driver’s seat and an adjustable outboard passenger seat with 14 positions of adjustment. Countless man hours were dedicated towards fine-tuning interior quietness therefore keeping unwanted road noises to levels that are almost undetectable.

Sound engineers addressed wind noise issues through the application of  three-layered seals on all doors plus with the use of special double sound-proof window glass. Thicker carpet and headliner insulation is also used along with special foam “hush pads” that squelch out noises.

To help prevent driver distraction, a full color Head’s-up Display features easy to read illumination as well as projects several important safety alerts.

Many of the car’s features are linked with an interactive sizable 12.3-inch high-definition dash mounted wide screen. The screen also plays a key role in enhancing the ease of parking during tight maneuvers,

An abbreviated list of safety enhancements include: Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning, Dynamic Bending Light and High Beam Assist, Nine Airbags, Smart Cruise Control, Electronic Parking Brake with Automatic Vehicle Hold, Multi-view and forward-view cameras plus integrated front and rear parking sensors.

Another driver protection feature includes Driver Attention Alert. Its designed to help monitor driving patterns in order to detect reckless or fatigued driving and prevent potential accidents. The suspension system delivers an exhilarating and memorable driving experience with overall dynamics that are simultaneously luxurious, sporty and refined. Handling dynamics are further enhanced with the use of a Rack-Mounted, Motor-Driven, power steering unit that assists in precise steering response with a natural feel.

The responsive V6 engine is rated at 365 horsepower when tested with premium fuel. Their optional and powerful 5.0-liter direct-injected V8 engine producing 420 horsepower, when operated with premium grade gasoline. Either engine can also be used with regular grade unleaded fuel, however top end acceleration may be impacted somewhat.

Regardless of the engine being considered, they are nicely matched with an advanced 2nd-generation, 8-speed automatic transmission. It's lighter, more efficient and has better shift logic than the transmission it replaces.

Also included with the MSRP is 3 years/36K miles Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance and Complimentary Valet Services. The retail pricing doesn't include the factory's $950 shipping and freight charges. There are roughly some 350 Genesis retail dealers in the U.S., aligned with select Hyundai dealerships.
