Mazda takes a giant step toward HCCI

(July 9, 2018) HCCI, Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition, is the holy grail of internal combustion in that gasoline engines would run like diesels on compression ignition, at much higher efficiency levels, and with lower pollution. The basic problem with HCCI, however, has been the inability to control the combustion process under changing conditions. Leave it to the boffins at Mazda to take a look at the problem from a less theoretically rigid angle to create a workable solution.

Mitsubishi announces rollout of new global dealership design

(July 8, 2018) CYPRESS, Calif. — Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has announced a new dealer visual identity program that will take effect later this year. As part of the initiative, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will introduce an updated exterior and interior design in approximately 5,000 dealerships worldwide.

Volkswagen shares footage from I.D. Pikes Peak record-breaking run

(July 7, 2018) HERNDON Va. — On June 24th, Volkswagen made motorsports history at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Today, video of the entire record-breaking run is available for the first time. The 671 horsepower, fully-electric I.D. R Pikes Peak, driven by Romain Dumas, outran cars powered by conventional drivetrain technology and, with a time of 7:57.148 minutes, not only smashed the previous electric car record, but bested the all-time record set in 2013 by Sébastien Loeb — by fully 16 seconds.

BMW making final preparations for production of all-new X5

(July 7, 2017) SPARTANBURG, S.C. — As Americans enjoy the holiday week and prepare for their summer adventures, preparations of a different kind are nearing completion at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina — the final phases of gearing up for production of the all-new BMW X5, which begins later this summer.

Volkswagen to start rolling out all-electric car sharing services

(July 6, 2018) The Volkswagen brand will be offering its customers "zero-emission" car sharing services in the near future. Volkswagen's new WE (electric car) customer platform is to begin rolling out various vehicle-on-demand services, in particular car sharing, in Germany in 2019. These services will be extended to major cities in Europe, North America and Asia as early as 2020. This was announced by the Volkswagen Brand board member for Sales, Jürgen Stackmann, at an event held in Berlin.

Jeep, Ram bolster FCA sales in June

(July 6, 2018) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Fiat Chrysler Automobiles reported one of 264 vehicles, an 8 percent increase compared with sales in June 2017 of 187,348 vehicles.
 
Overall sales were bolstered by both the Jeep and Ram Truck brands, which reported significant increases for the month. FCA retail sales came in at 155,208, marking the best June sales since 2004 when sales reached 155,663 vehicles. Fleet accounted for 23 percent of total sales, a 1 percent decline from the previous year.
 

Production begins on new 2019 BMW 8 Series Coupe

(July 6, 2018) DINGOLFING, Germany — BMW Group Plant Dingolfing began series production of the new BMW 8 Series Coupé this week, the sports car that will launch the BMW model offensive in the luxury segment. An amount in the low three-digit-million euro range has been invested in the site in Lower Bavaria in preparation for the new model series.

A large number of digital innovations have also been integrated into the production process, including self-driving transport systems and smart devices.

BMW hides its new sport coupe under a tech platform

(July 6, 2018) The first generation 8 Series was introduced in 1989 as a top of the line coupe for the BMW brand, sitting above the 7 Series sedan in the same way the 6 Series sat above the 5 Series. More powerful, luxurious and expensive than the 6 Series, the V8- or V12-powered 8 Series suffered from slowing sales and falling demand, leading to its cancellation in 1999.
