Johnson Controls to expand plant capacity to meet start-stop demand

(August 5, 2015) MILWAUKEE — Johnson Controls is expanding the production of advanced batteries for Start-Stop vehicles amid growing demand for better fuel economy and more sustainable technologies. The company will increase its existing Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) battery capacity in its Toledo, Ohio, plant, bringing the overall invested amount to $130 million since the start of production for this technology in the U.S. in 2012.

Toyota reports record first-quarter profit

(August 5, 2015) TOKYO — Toyota has reported a third straight year of record profit for its first quarter as cost cuts and currency gains made up for slightly weaker vehicle sales. April-June net profit jumped 10 percent to 646.39 billion yen ($5.22 billion). Operating profit rose 9.1 percent to 756 billion yen on revenue that grew 9.3 percent, Toyota said in an earnings release.

GM invests $877 million for Flint Assembly upgrades

(August 5, 2015) FLINT, Mich. — General Motors’ oldest assembly plant in North America, a popular destination for pickup truck customers who want to watch their vehicles being built, will undergo transformation in the coming years.

GM officials have announced plans to invest $877 million to build a new body shop for the assembly plant, locating it closer to the Flint Metal Center, which supplies sheet metal and other parts used in the Chevrolet and GMC full-size pickups produced in the assembly plant.

Mini on the Mack sets U.S. record, but falls short of world record

Although the world record attempt at the largest parade of MINIs fell short, the biennial MINI owners rally organized by MINI of Grand Rapids and MINI USA did manage to set the new record for the largest gathering of MINIs in the U.S. The event attracted 1,319 MINIs of all shapes, colors and sizes for the rally across the 26,372 feet long, 500 feet high span of Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge — missing the world record by only 132 MINIs.
