Range Rover Evoque named Scottish Car of the Year

(October 17, 2011) Land Rover’s new Range Rover Evoque was named the overwhelming winner of the Scottish Car of the Year awards this weekend by the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers. It also was named Best Compact SUV.

Announcing the Evoque's triumph, Jim Murdoch, president of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, described the new Land Rover as a “wholly deserving” winner of the Scottish Car of the Year title.

Electric vehicle charging network planned for UK

(October 17, 2011) BRIGHTON, England — Elektromotive, the Brighton-based electric vehicle (EV) recharging point manufacturer, has welcomed the announcement that a privately funded EV network is to be rolled out across the UK over the next 12 months.

Chargemaster’s introduction of the POLAR recharging network plans to bring over 4,000 charging points to British towns and cities throughout 2012, and Elektromotive believes this news will help build consumer confidence in the electric vehicle as a viable form of transport.

GM: Self-driving vehicle systems will be ready by end of decade

(October 17, 2011) DETROIT — Vehicles that partially drive themselves will be available by the middle of the decade with more sophisticated self-driving systems by the end of the decade, General Motors Vice President of Global Research and Development Alan Taub says.

These advances in autonomous vehicle technology are built on leading-edge advanced active safety systems, Taub told the Intelligent Transport Systems World Congress in Orlando on Sunday.

Seven automakers collaborate on fast-charging solution

(October 16, 2011) DEARBORN, Mich. — Recognizing the importance of a single international approach for DC fast charging, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen have agreed on the combined charging system as an international standardized approach to charge electric vehicles (EV) in Europe and the United States.

A Volkswagen first — More than six million vehicles sold in first nine months

(October 15, 2011) WOLFSBURG, Germany — In the first nine months of the year, the Volkswagen Group boosted deliveries by 13.9 percent to 6.11 million vehicles in world automotive markets. Deliveries in September also developed well for Europe's largest automaker with 751,900 vehicles handed over to customers.

Positive developments in growth markets continued including North America where Volkswagen reported January through September sales rose 21.4 percent over the same period in 2010 with 485,400 vehicles sold.

Future Chevrolets to benefit from small gas engine family

(October 15, 2011) DETROIT — General Motors will develop an all-new global family of small-displacement Ecotec gasoline engines over the next several years that will give customers in markets around the world improved fuel economy, higher quality, better performance and reduced carbon dioxide emissions.

The program could encompass more than 2 million engines a year by the end of the decade.

Global sales for Jaguar Land Rover increase 26 percent in September

(October 14, 2011) Jaguar Land Rover has recorded a 26 per cent increase in global retail sales for September 2011 with China delivering another record month with sales up 157 per cent for Jaguar and 85 per cent for Land Rover.

China remains Jaguar Land Rover's third largest market with retails up 60 per cent for the year to September. 

New free service warns car owner when vehicle is about to be towed

(October 14, 2011) LAKE FOREST, Calif. — A new free tow notification service — Call Before Tow — allows vehicle owners to be notified when their vehicle is about to be towed on private property.

The service offered by CBT Solutions Inc. notifies vehicle owners by a text message and a phone call, warning them to move their vehicles before a tow. The warning is designed to prevent the tow and allow vehicle owners enough time to promptly move their vehicle.

Crazy for coconuts: Ford and Miracle-Gro research coconut fiber use in vehicles

(October 14, 2011) NEW YORK — Coconuts are ingredients in plenty of items — pies, cakes and tropical drinks. Now, Ford is hoping to add cars to that list by working with The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company to research how coconut coir, or husks, might be used as a plastic reinforcement.

“This is a win-win situation. We’re taking a material that is a waste stream from another industry and using it to increase the sustainability in our vehicles,” said Dr. Ellen Lee, technical expert for Plastics Research at Ford.
