Explorer 'sets new benchmark for sustainability'

The reinvented Explorer, which arrives later this year, also sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the SUV segment due to an increased use of renewable and recycled content, such as parts made from steel left over from F-150 production, Ford reports.

OnStar cautioning drivers on in-car heat danagers

(August 5, 200) DETROIT — Only parents and caregivers can be sure their child or pet is not left unattended in a vehicle, but with August’s hot temperatures, OnStar advisors are ending calls by cautioning drivers who push the blue button to avoid a potentially fatal mistake.

From Aug. 1-14, a non-emergency contact from an active OnStar-equipped vehicle will close with the advisor’s caution:  “Please remember when it is hot not to leave kids or pets alone in a vehicle."

Hyundai predicts 50 mpg average in 15 years

(August 5, 2010) TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — Hyundai announced plans Wednesday to achieve a corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) rating of at least 50 miles per gallon by 2025 for its lineup of passenger cars and light duty trucks.

GM commemorates 30 years of aerodynamic testing

(August 4, 2010) WARREN, Mich. — For 30 years, engineers have used the GM Aerodynamics Laboratory to improve fuel economy by helping cars and trucks slip through the air more easily.

Put into operation in August 1980, the wind tunnel is the largest of its type dedicated to automotive work. Over three decades, engineers have cut the coefficient of drag (C D) of GM vehicles by approximately 25 percent.

Toyota raises full-year profit forecast

(August 4, 2010) Toyota today raised its full-year profit forecast as sales in Asia are growing more than expected and demand in the U.S. recovers following the recall of more than 11.2 million vehicles globally, according to Bloomberg News.

Toyota may post net income of 340 billion yen ($3.98 billion) in the year ending in March, compared with an earlier estimate of 310 billion yen, it said in a statement today.

Ford injects its most powrful diesel engine with 800 foot-pounds of torque

GM, Ford show modest gains in slow July

(August 3, 2010) General Motors and Ford both showed modest gains in July over a year ago, but they weren't the robost numbers of the past few months.

Total industry sales advanced 5 percent from a year earlier for the smallest monthly increase since January. The seasonally adjusted annual selling rate was 11.55 million, the year's third highest.

GM posted a 6 percent increase selling 199,602 cars and trucks in July, its smallest monthly increase this year. Ford managed a 3 percent gain, its smallest since November 2009.

BMW reports biggest profit in 30 months

(August 3, 2010) BMW reported the biggest profit in two and a half years after demand for the new 5 series surged and sales advanced in China and the U.S., Bloomberg News reported.

Second-quarter net income attributable to shareholders gained more than sixfold to 831 million euros ($1.09 billion) from 119 million euros a year earlier, the carmaker said.
