Toyota extending no-interest loans, discounts on some models

(April 7, 2010) LOS ANGELES — Toyota is extending no- interest loans and discount leases for another month on some U.S. models and expanding an offer of two years of free maintenance to hold onto sales gains after record recalls.

The incentives include zero-percent financing for as long as five years on 2010 Camry, Avalon, Corolla and Matrix cars; Highlander and RAV4 SUVs; and Tundra pickups. All consumers are now eligible for the service plan, not just repeat customers. The deals run until May 3.

GM to expand its brake override system to all passenger cars

(April 6, 2010) General Motors will expand use of “enhanced smart pedal” technology globally to all passenger cars with automatic transmissions and electronic throttle control, providing an additional safeguard to enhance customer confidence.

Also known as brake override, the change involves modifying existing electronic controls to reduce power to the engine in cases where the brake and accelerator pedal are being depressed at the same time. The global rollout will be completed by the end of 2012.

Government issues record fine saying Toyota 'knowingly hid dangerous defect'

(April 6, 2010) Toyota “knowingly hid a dangerous defect” that caused its vehicles to accelerate unexpectedly, the U.S. said, for the first time accusing the world's largest automaker of breaking the law.

Already flooded with hundreds of private lawsuits, Toyota now faces a dilemma stemming from safety problems on several popular models — whether to accept a record $16.4 million fine that could be cast as an admission of wrongdoing, or fight the government at the cost of more bad publicity.

Diesels a tough sell in U.S., but will gain small share, J.D. Power predicts

(April 5, 2010) General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told participants at the recent J.D. Power and Associates International Automotive Roundtable in Orlando, Fla., that diesels likely will have a small and not a major place in the U.S. market, and pointed out that automakers selling diesels here currently are operating on waivers, especially since the Tier II Bin 5 environmental requirements are so strict.

First pre-production Chevrolet Volt comes off assembly line

Toyota, Ford show big March gains; GM leads in March sales with 188,011

(April 3, 2010) Toyota and Ford  posted big U.S. sales gains in March as industry wide incentives and improving consumer confidence brought buyers back to showrooms.

Total U.S. sales advanced 24 percent from the depressed levels of March 2009. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate of 11.7 million was lower than analysts' forecasts but still marked the year's strongest.

Dodge's Ralph Gilles: We'll play to our strength

Gilles, who made his name at Chrysler Group with vehicles like the Chrysler 300, was appointed president of the company's Dodge brand in October. Lexus outsells Mercedes in March to inch ahead in quarterly luxury sales

(April 3, 2010) Lexus -- the leading luxury-auto brand in the United States for the past decade -- used a 42 percent gain in March to inch ahead of rival Mercedes-Benz after the first quarter, according to Bloomberg News.

Lexus sold 20,219 vehicles last month and 49,523 for the year's first three months. Mercedes reported sales of 20,023 cars and SUVs for March, a 28 percent increase from a year earlier, and 49,229 for the quarter. The Mercedes tallies exclude Sprinter vans formerly sold by Dodge -- 1,337 of them in the first quarter.

Volkswagen Polo named 2010 World Car of the Year

Volkswagen's Blue Motion brand named 2010 World Green Car of the Year

(April 1, 2010) NEW YORK (PRNewswire) — Volkswagen's BlueMotion product brand consisting of the Golf, Passat, and Polo, was named the 2010 World Green Car of the Year by the World Car of The Year organization.

The Volkswagen BlueMotion models were awarded Green Car of The Year by 59 World Car jurors from 25 countries throughout the world.  The 59 member jury awarded the BlueMotion product brand over two other finalists in the 2010 World Green Car award — the Honda Insight and the Toyota Prius.
