Toyota introduces 2012 Camry

(August 23, 2011) GEORGETOWN, Ky. —  It is almost impossible to measure the importance of the new Camry to Toyota, especially now as the company struggles to regain its footing after various safety issues, real and perceived, and the horrific events of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last March.

Historically the Camry has been the bestselling car (not including pickup trucks) in the U.S. in 13 of the last 14 years, and is on pace for the top spot again in 2011. Additionally Camry accounted for 22 percent of all Toyotas sold in the U.S. in 2010.

Dan Edmunds, Director of Vehicle Testing at Edmunds.com notes, The company is counting on the redesigned sedan to restore its reputation as a manufacturer of safe and reliable vehicles. The engineering team assigned to the 2012 Camry studied more than double the number of parts as compared to the previous-generation Camry, anticipating any possible issues in the early stages of development and improving the design quality of the parts.

It would be difficult to drive any configuration of the 2012 Camry and not walk away from the model feeling that the multiplicity of improvements means Toyota has done it right.”

Scott Doggett also of Edmunds.com says, “As ever, the Camry is aimed at the heart of the market where value, fuel economy, safety, quality and comfort reign supreme. The new 2012 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid represent notable improvements on all of these fronts.”

The redesigned Camry, however, comes at a time when its momentum has seen a downward shift: The Camry (including hybrid models) has accounted for 14.3 percent of all midsize car sales in the U.S. through July this year, down from 17.2 percent in 2010 and from 20.1 percent in 2009.

At today’s launch of the new Camry at Georgetown, Kentucky, Toyota president, Akio Toyoda affirmed the importance noting that Camry is, “a symbol of Toyota’s success.”

Georgetown has been building Camry since its introduction 25-years ago. The plant has built more than 6.7 million of the mid-sized best seller.
