Toyota hits 2 million mark in worldwide hybrid sales

(September 4, 2009) Lead by the Prius, Toyota surpassed the 2 million mark in worldwide hybrid vehicle sales last month.

Toyota has announced that on Aug. 9 it reached 2.017 million hybrids sold since their debut in 1997. North American sales accounted for 1.15 million of the total and Japanese customers purchased 615,800.

The Prius alone has accounted for 1.429 million of the sales since its introduction in December 1997. The Prius started reaching U.S. showrooms in 2000. Toyota says its goal is to sell 1 million hybrids a year in the coming years. Again the Prius is the driving force. Toyota expects to sell 600,000 copies of the 2010 model in its first full year on the market.

Today, Toyota sells 13 hybrid vehicle models in about 50 countries.
