The sedan lives — VW unveils stylish ID. AERO sedan concept

(June 28, 2022) WOLFSBURG, Germany — Dynamic, strong and with pure aerodynamics: Volkswagen gives a preview of the brand's first global all-electric sedan. VW says its progressive, stylish and aerodynamic design allows for a generous amount of space inside. The Chinese production version is expected to be launched in the second half of 2023.

“With the ID. AERO show car, we are giving a preview of the next member of the VW electric vehicle family. A car with an emotional yet very aerodynamic design, a range of more than 600 kilometers (370 miles), exceptional space and a premium interior,” says Ralf Brandstätter, Chief Executive Officer of the Volkswagen Passenger Cars brand. “With our ACCELERATE strategy, we are driving the electrification of our model range at full speed. After the ID.4, this model will be our next world car. "

The ID. AERO transfers Volkswagen’s electric vehicle design language to a sedan for the first time. The wind flows optimally over the aerodynamically designed front and roof sections, with a spoiler at the rear to aid stability. Classic door handles are replaced by illuminated touch surfaces that further reduce air resistance. In the upper part of the silhouette, the striking tornado line and the coupe-like roof help to characterize the design.

The ID.AERO is painted in Polar Light Blue Metallic — a light metallic shade whose color pigments create a golden shimmer when the light hits it right. The roof is finished in high-gloss black to contrast with the bodywork.

The front end has typical ID. honeycomb motifs. Lighting is important on the ID.AERO concept, with a striking light signature at the front in white and a rear end that has a dark light stripe and honeycomb LED taillights.

The concept vehicle is almost 16 feet (197 inches) long and was designed to be aerodynamic. Its sloping coupe-style roof helps achieve a drag coefficient of 0.23. The modular electric drive matrix (MEB) from Volkswagen also enables short overhangs, a long wheelbase and a spacious interior. The ID AERO has a powerful lithium-ion battery with a net energy content of 77 kWh. Through the interaction of efficient drive and the very good aerodynamic properties, the ID. AERO long-distance ranges of up to 385 miles on the WLTP cycle (an estimated 300 miles by EPA standard).

The ID AERO shows the diversity of the all-electric MEB architecture. The platform can be customized for vehicles of different shapes and sizes. From the compact crossover to SUVs, a minibus to a spacious sedan, the MEB can be used across all segments.

The production version of the ID. AERO for Europe is expected to roll off the assembly line at the Emden plant in 2023. With the volume production of electric vehicles, Emden, as one of the first Volkswagen plants of this type in Lower Saxony, Germany, will make a significant contribution to electrifying the model range.
The new sedan is expected to be sold in the United States.
