Pre-war dream cars offered at final RM Sotheby's Amelia Island auction

(February 4, 2023) AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. — RM Sotheby’s final Amelia Island sale adds a pre-war collectors dream garage with stunning offerings from A Private Collection, a group of cars consisting of 10 pre- and post-war examples from American Classics to European Sports Cars. The Private Collection will cross the block on March 4 alongside other specially curated automobiles.

 Auction highlights

1931 Duesenberg Model J 'Disappearing Top' Convertible Coupe by Murphy — Formerly owned by Pacific Auto Rentals and featured in several classic Hollywood films, this Model J retains its numbers-matching chassis, firewall, engine, and coachwork. Boasting purity throughout, this well-preserved example sports a multiple award-winning restoration and has an impressive history file testifying to its provenance and to its excellence as one of the best surviving Murphy ‘Disappearing Top’ Convertible Coupes (Estimate: $3,850,000 – $4,500,000).

1934 Packard Twelve Sport Coupe by LeBaron — This LeBaron-built Sport Coupe body is one of four built on a shortened 136-inch wheelbase with twelve-cylinder power. Known as the New York Sport Coupe, this was the chassis used to show off the Packard Custom Body Division’s prowess at the city’s signature auto show in 1934. With its aerodynamic shape presented in Packard Green, and previously a part of the prestigious collections of Arturo Keller and Paul Andrews, this is an opportunity to own a genuine piece of pre-war history (Estimate: $2,250,000 – $3,000,000).

1930 Cadillac V-16 Roadster by Fleetwood — Purchased new by a prominent Massachusetts family, this example was sold after just three years, during the depths of the Great Depression. Carefully preserved by its second owner, the father of noted pre-war collector John Moir, this example was retained by the Moir family for over 80 years until being acquired by the current owner in 2014. Finished in its original color combination, this CCCA Full Classic still retains its original chassis, body, and engine (Estimate: $1,100,000 – $1,500,000).

1930 Packard 745 Deluxe Eight Convertible Victoria by Waterhouse — Preserved in the present collection now for nearly a decade, this Packard is one of the best-known examples of an iconic style on its ultimate chassis and is one of just four known survivors on the 745 Deluxe Eight chassis. The quality of its design and workmanship is clearly evident throughout as this CCCA Full Classic boasts a national award-winning restoration (Estimate: $350,000 - $450,000).
