Powerful Volkswagen Golf R to debut in Frankfurt

(September 3, 2013) — The most powerful Golf in the range excites with 296 horsepower and a 0 to 62 mph sprint time of just 4.9 seconds. The vehicle’s distinctive styling also highlights its sporty character. The new Volkswagen Golf R will have its world premier at the Frankfurt Motor Show next week.

The Golf R was developed by Volkswagen R GmbH to provide dynamic performance. The sportiest Golf is powered by a newly configured 296 horsepower TSI engine, which is not only 30 horsepower more powerful, but also 18 per cent more fuel-efficient than the previous engine.

Its maximum torque was boosted by 22 pound feet to 280 lb-ft. To achieve these outputs, the engine went through a motorsports-style development program. The new 4MOTION all-wheel drive system delivers optimal traction under all conditions on the street and on the track.

The car is also distinguished by revised styling compared with the new Golf GTI. Signs of the vehicle’s sporty character are: its distinctive air intakes; specially designed bumpers and side sills; and, its dual-branch exhaust system with four chrome tailpipes. The Golf R emphasizes sportiness and performance in its restrained yet distinctive appearance. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Volkswagen Design, explains: “The Golf R creates an exciting balance between seriousness and sportiness and between restraint and differentiation.”

The new Golf R launches on the market at the end of 2013, and customers can choose between a manual gearbox and a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission. Standard vehicle features include the variable-ratio “progressive” steering, Bi-Xenon headlights and 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tires.
