Nissan sets May global sales record

(June 28, 2011) Nissan today reported that despite the after affects of the March earthquake in Japan and a steep falloff in Japanese sales, global sales increased 6.3 percent year-on-year to 344,934 units, marking an all-time record for May.

Including mini-vehicles, Nissan sold 37,981 units in Japan, down 12.9 percent year-on-year, due to effects of the earthquake.

In Japan, vehicle registrations in May decreased 16.1 percent year-on-year to 28,031 units, despite increased sales of Juke.

Domestic sales of mini-vehicles were down 2.6 percent from the previous year to 9,950 units, despite increased demand for Moco.

Sales outside of Japan, however, increased 9.3 percent year-on-year to 306,953 units, marking an all-time record. In Europe, sales increased 37 percent year-on-year to 58,671 units, due to sales recovery in Russia and increased demand for Juke.

In China, sales saw an increase of 15 percent year-on-year to 93,270 units, marking an all-time record for May. This was due mainly to increased demand for the new Sunny, launched in January, and Qashqai.

Sales in other regions increased 8.6 percent year-on-year to 55,823 units, mainly due to increased demand in Thailand, India and Indonesia (markets where the new March/Micra has been launched) and favorable sales in Brazil and Colombia.

Sales in the U.S. decreased 9.1 percent year-on-year to 76,148 units, despite increased demand for Altima.
