Land Rover recalling 4,000 2010 Range Rovers for defective airbag software

(December 7, 2009) Jaguar Land Rover is recalling more than 4,000 model year 2010 Range Rover vehicles built at the Solihull (UK) Assembly Plant from March 3, 2009, through to Nov. 12, 2009, to update faulty software that could cause an airbag deployment failure.

In spite of the potential seriousness of the problem with a major safety system, Land Rover told U.S. safety regulators that it “does not plan to make a public statement concerning the subject matter of this action.”

The Range Rover vehicles with “Occupant Classification System (OCS)” may set an airbag warning lamp to the on position on the instrument cluster. The passenger airbag will be disabled when the airbag warning lamp is on because of this defect. The “Passenger Airbag Warning Disable (PAWD) lamp” in the overhead console will also illuminate. Deployment of the passenger airbag will not occur in and accident resulting in and  injury or death.

Dealers will update the vehicle’s restraints control module with new software. This service will be performed free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before Dec. 21.

Owners may contact Jaguar Land Rover at 1-800-452-4827 about recall PO20.
