Honda unveils small electric sports concept in Tokyo

(November 30, 2011) TOKYO, Japan — The world premiere of the Honda EV-STER, the next-generation electric small sports concept model, occurred today at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show.

Featuring an innovative styling design and excellent environmental performance, the EV-STER, an electric rear-wheel-drive two-seater convertible sports car, will propose a new way to enjoy a sports type model which is unique to the electromotive mobility.

Honda says that the concept is intended to show off what it feels is a dynamic and innovative styling design, coupled with excellent “environmental performance.”

The adoption of carbon materials made it possible to reduce the vehicle weight contributing to the vehicle's high driving performance and range of approximately 99 miles. The easy-to-operate twin-lever steering was adopted for the thorough pursuit of the joy of driving. Moreover, the new concept model enables the driver to make his/her own adjustments to some vehicle characteristics such as motor output and suspension settings.

The EV-STER is equipped with a lithium-ion battery and has an output of 78 horsepower. Honda says it moves from zero-37 mph in 5.0 seconds

It rides on a 91.5-inch wheelbase and is 12 feet long.

Honda hints that this is just the first of several innovative Honda products that will sport a new design language.

"We will sequentially introduce multiple new models, including a high-performance sports model which is currently under development toward market introduction in the near future," said Takanobu Ito, Honda president and CEO in a speech on Wednesday.
