Honda, Nissan issue recalls of late-model vehicles

(April 19, 2013) Honda said Thursday it will recall 205,000 vehicles in the United States to fix an automatic shift problem. The Japanese automaker said the recall covers 128,000 Honda CR-V vehicles and 59,000 Honda Odyssey vehicles from the 2012-13 model years and 17,500 Acura RDX vehicles from the 2013 model year. A component of the brake shift interlock system will be replaced in the vehicles.

Nissan said today it is recalling 19,258 SUVs in the United States over potentially faulty brakes. The Japanese automaker said it is recalling some 2013 Pathfinder and Infiniti JX vehicles built between December 2012 and January 2013 in Smyrna, Tenn.

In the Honda recall, the company said in sub-freezing temperatures, the vehicle's transmission may shift out of the park position without depressing the brake pedal. Honda will notify owners by mail in mid-May.

Nissan said in its recall that the front brake torque member was improperly cast resulting in structural weakness. This can lead to premature failure and cracking. If the part fails, the brake caliper may move and contact the inside of the road wheel, resulting in reduced braking, increasing the risk of a crash, Nissan told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the parts as necessary. The recall is expected to begin in early May.
