GM's joint China venture to build first Baojun-brand passenger car

(October 27, 2010) SHANGHAI — SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW) has announced that the first passenger car sold under its new Baojun brand will be called the Baojun 630. The first Baojun 630 will roll off the production line at the joint venture’s manufacturing facility in Liuzhou, Guangxi, on Nov. 18.

The initial digit of the sedan’s name refers to its model series, the second digit refers to its body type and the final digit refers to its being the earliest generation of the Baojun brand. SGMW plans to launch a new Baojun model annually over the next several years. In addition to traditional passenger cars, it also plans to offer SUVs and MPVs under the brand.

SGMW is in the process of building a nationwide network of Baojun dealers and expanding its production capacity. An industrial park in Liuzhou that was created for SGMW’s passenger car suppliers has attracted many leading companies from China and abroad.

Last year, the joint venture between GM China, SAIC and Wuling Motors became the first manufacturer in China to top sales and production of 1 million vehicles in a single year. Its sales in 2010 reached 1 million units on Oct. 12. SGMW’s Wuling Sunshine minivan remains China’s most popular motor vehicle.
