Ford growth outpaces UK market

(June 8, 2012) BRENTWOOD, Essex — UK market leader Ford benefitted from a surge in commercial vehicle sales in May to ensure that Ford’s total vehicle sales and share were up for both the month and for the year to date, compared with 2011.

Ford car sales were up 7 per cent in May, compared with May 2011, while the car market as a whole was up 7.9 per cent, according to the official figures released today from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT):

    • Ford car sales and share up in May and for the year to date
    • Ford Fiesta is the UK best seller for the year to date
    • Ford commercial vehicle sales and share up in May
    • Ford Transit accounts for more than one-in-five sales in the total CV market

The official figures released by the SMMT show that total car sales in May were up 7.9 per cent to 162,288 units, compared with May 2011. Ford car sales of 23,083 were up 7 per cent, from 21,581 in May 2011.  For the year to date (through May) total UK car sales were 868,166 up 2.6 per cent compared with 2012, while Ford car sales for this period in 2012 were 126,215 up 5.2 per cent compared with 2011.

Ford Fiesta best-selling car in UK

Ford’s strong performance in car sales through 2012 is underlined by the Ford Fiesta’s clear No 1 position in the UK market for the year to date.  Ford Fiesta sales increased from 42,814 to 50,507, compared with the same period in 2011.

Ford’s large car range made significant gains in May, securing sales and share increases compared with May 2011.  Ford Mondeo, Ford S-MAX and Ford Galaxy sales of 2,105, 1,166 and 1,040, respectively, were up from 1,356, 675 and 669 in May 2011.

After slow sales from January through April, the UK light commercial vehicle and medium commercial vehicle segments picked up significantly in May with sales up 11per cent, compared with May 2011.  Ford’s combined sales in these segments were up 32.3 per cent in May, increasing to 7,178 from 5,425 in May 2011.

Ford medium commercials, headed by the industry-leading Ford Transit, accounted for 31.3 per cent of sales in that segment for the year to date, up from 28.2 per cent in 2011.  Ford Transit’s position as the UK’s best-selling commercial vehicle remains unchallenged: Transit sales were up in May, increasing from 4,426 to 5,880, compared with May 2011.
