Car club announces countdown on Joe Strummer's 1963 Thunderbird

(August 21, 2014) LOS ANGELES — Less than 24 hours remain to claim Clash vocalist Joe Strummer's 1963 Chalfont Blue Ford Thunderbird on eBay. Bidding on the original California double black-plate Bullet body style T-Bird is currently at $30,600. Originally purchased by Strummer in 1987 for $4,200, the vehicle has remained in good condition, having spent several years in a climate controlled garage.

"We have received an overwhelming amount of calls from people interested in buying the car," explains Alex Manos, president of one of the largest European classic car dealerships in the United States, Beverly Hills Car Club. 

"The attention this car has received has truly been unprecedented. We often have vehicles with interesting histories or connections to movie stars or legendary musicians, but the activity around Joe Strummer's T-Bird has been truly exciting."

This priceless piece of rock 'n' roll history was owned by Strummer in 1987 and 1988 during which time he resided in a house on Ridgemount Drive off Laurel Canyon, frequently taking his partner Gaby and their two young daughters on family outings to the desert in the T-Bird. In May 1988 he and Gaby drove the 850 miles in the Ford Thunderbird to New Mexico for the Santa Fe Film Festival, where Mystery Train, Jim Jarmusch's masterly independent film, in which Joe starred, was being screened.

The auction's Thursday, Aug. 21, (7:31 p.m.) expiration date falls on what would be Strummer's 62nd birthday, he passed away on Dec. 22, 2002.
