Applying pumpkin math to Chevrolet sport utilities

(October 21, 2017) A new graphic compares the 2018 Chevrolet SUV line-up on the basis of pumpkin carrying capacity. Created by GMPartsOnline.net, the graphic compares the cargo capacity of each of Chevrolet's five new SUVs on the basis of pumpkin space. Surprisingly, when comparing cargo capacity behind the last row of seats, Chevy's smaller SUVs offer more space than larger models.

“As we all know, cargo space is one of the main benefits of buying an SUV,” says Angel Vigil, director of GMPartsOnline.net. “We thought it would be fun to use pumpkins to compare the cargo space behind the last row of seats for each new Chevy SUV. Imagine our surprise when we learned that the entry-level Chevy Trax can hold more pumpkins than a Tahoe.”

Rather than actually loading pumpkins into brand new SUVs, GMPartsOnline.net used "pumpkin math" to calculate the pumpkin carrying capacity of each vehicle.

    • The average medium-sized Jack-O-Lantern breed of pumpkin is typically 9 to 10 inches tall, 7 to 10 inches around, and weighs an average of 14 pounds.

    • According to multiple pumpkin farmers, roughly 85 medium-size Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins will fit inside a standard 36-inch bulk produce bin

    • With a volume of 40 cubic feet in a standard 36-inch produce bin, it was estimated that there are 2.1 pumpkins per cubic foot of cargo space

The pumpkin math was applied to all five of Chevrolet's new SUVs, specifically to the cargo space behind the last row of seats.

"We wanted to measure pumpkin capacity based on a vehicle full of passengers. We assumed that each SUV is equipped with a 3rd row seat if one is available, and that the third row seat is in use. The Tahoe doesn't have quite as much cargo capacity as the Trax when that third row seat it up, which means it is not the best choice for pumpkin hauling duty," says Vigil. "The Suburban is the winner, but the Equinox is the surprise."

Here are the cargo and pumpkin capacities for each model:

    2018 Trax - 18.7 cubic feet behind the 2nd r
ow of seats, which works out to 39 pumpkins
2018 Equinox - 29.9 cubic feet behind the 2nd row of seats, which works out to 63 pumpkins
2018 Traverse - 23 cubic feet behind the 3rd row of seats, which works out to 48 pumpkins
2018 Tahoe - 15.3 cubic feet behind the 3rd row of seats, which works out to only 32 pumpkins
2018 Suburban - 39.3 cubic feet behind the 2nd row of seats, which works out to 83 pumpkins
