Car shoppers get temporary reprieve as interest rates drop

(June 10, 2019) SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Interest rates for new vehicles dipped to their lowest level of 2019 in May, according to the car shopping experts at Edmunds. The annual percentage rate (APR) on new financed vehicles averaged 6.1% in May, compared to 6.27% in April.

Edmunds analysts say this month-over-month dip is in part due to a bump in zero percent finance deals from automakers in May; these deals constituted 5.7% of financed transactions, compared to 3.2% last month.

Study finds prime customers continue to opt for used vehicles

Findings from the Q1 2019 State of the Automotive Finance Market report show that the percentage of prime (61.88 percent) and super-prime (44.78 percent) consumers choosing used vehicles reached an all-time high.

IIHS finds vehicle manufacturers make strides on LATCH ease of use

(June 7, 2019) Nearly three-quarters of 2019 vehicles have LATCH hardware that rates good or acceptable for ease of use, as automakers continue making improvements that help parents and caregivers properly install child restraints, according to testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The results mark a shift from 2015, when IIHS launched its LATCH ease-of-use ratings. At that time, a majority of new vehicles rated poor or marginal.

Gas Stations see business climb 69% during Memorial Day weekend

(June 7, 2019) BOSTON — GasBuddy reveals how impactful the holiday weekend was for fuel and convenience retailers, with gas stations along major highways seeing a 69% lift overall compared to the previous weekend. Meanwhile, quick service restaurants only saw a 27% lift and coffee shops saw a 20% lift.

Lunchtime visits from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. made up 36% of all traffic to gas stations over the holiday weekend. When compared to the previous weekend, gas stations saw a 105% uplift in foot traffic during lunch hours.

Average new-car prices up nearly 4 percent year-over-year for May

New-vehicle prices increased $1,320 (up 3.7 percent) from May 2018, while decreasing $208 (down 0.6 percent) from last month.

Pump prices continue to push lower for majority of motorists

AAA lists key deadly behaviors for teen drivers this summer

(June 3, 2019) WASHINGTON — Over the past five years, nearly 3,500 people have been killed in crashes involving teen drivers during the 100 Deadliest Days, the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when the number of crash fatalities involving a teen driver historically rise.

New crash data from 2013-2017 reveals major factors contributing to fatal teen crashes during the summer driving period include: speeding (28 percent); drinking and driving (17 percent); distraction (9 percent).
