Misfueling — What to do if it happens to you

(March 5, 2013) LONDON —The AA estimates that as many as 150,000 drivers in the UK put the wrong type of fuel in their vehicles every year.

The AA website suggests that the rise in incidents of "'misfueling" may be attributable to the rise in sales of diesel-fueled cars. Traditionally thought of as running particularly noisy engines, diesel engines have been getting increasingly quieter and — particularly in the case of rental cars or second cars — it's easy to forget you're driving a car with a diesel engine.
