(November 24, 2021) There’s an old saying that if you’re late to the party you better be the best dressed. Criticized for taking too long to embrace electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz has just introduced its new all-electric flagship the EQS and it’s the fanciest, most luxurious EV ever. That’s years after competitors like Tesla S, Porsche Taycan, Jaguar iPace and Audi e-tron were introduced.

While the exterior design of the EQS with looks loosely based on Mercedes’ gasoline powered large, expensive S-Class the real opulence happens inside the cabin. The EQS is a tour-de-force of exceptional, unequaled technological luxuries, including a giant 56-inch wall-to-wall glass hyperscreen as one massive panel housing three screens for the operational, infotainment system and gauge cluster.

We were impressed with the optional comfort doors that automatically open when the driver approaches the vehicle and after positioning yourself behind the wheel automatically closes.   You can also use “Hey Mercedes” to open any front or rear door. Seats are sumptuous and literally with pillows on the headrests.

Our high-end EQS 580 4MATIC is powered by a two-motor all-wheel-drive system with a 108-kWh battery pack delivering 516 horsepower and 611 pound-feet of torque. The EPA rates our 580 at 340 miles. Zero-to-60 is reached in 4.1 seconds. A depleted battery will fully recharge in 11 hours using a 240-volt level 2 charger and replenish 70 percent of its battery in about 35 minutes using a DC fast charger.

Based on our weeklong testing, the EQS exhibits a silky-smooth ride with the standard air suspension system allowing the vehicle to seemingly float across bumps, potholes and imperfect road conditions. Its exceptionally quiet but you can turn on two different soundscapes of relaxing notes that’s pumped in through the standard and outrageously good Burmester audio system.

Overall, the EQS sets a new standard for impressive performance, interior opulence, and overall pinnacle of luxury, technology, and safety earning our distinction as the best electric car in the world. It’s lavish, stress-free futuristic motoring at its finest.
