2015 VW Golf family wins Green Car Reports' 'Best Car to Buy' award

(November 10, 2014) HERNDON, Va. — Volkswagen announced today that Green Car Reports, an online consumer resource for eco-friendly and fuel-efficient vehicles, has named the 2015 Volkswagen Golf range as its “Best Car to Buy 2015.” The versatile Golf lineup, comprised of fuel-efficient TDI Clean Diesel and TS models as well as the all-electric e-Golf, bested four other finalists.

“The range of green options in the 2015 Volkswagen Golf range is hard to beat," said Green Car Reports editor John Voelcker. “With more fuel-efficient gasoline engines, a new TDI diesel option that comes close to real-world hybrid mileage levels, and the all-electric VW e-Golf, the 2015 Golf gives buyers a good-better-best menu of options for driving green.”

The editors at Green Car Reports examined the most significant new green cars made available to shoppers during the 2015 model year, and selected the 2015 Golf range as “Best Car to Buy 2015” based on new technologies, practicality, and impact on the environment.

Volkswagen’s Golf TDI Clean Diesel models achieve an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 30 mpg city and 45 mpg highway when equipped with the six-speed manual transmission and 31/43 mpg with the six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. Golf TDIs are available as four-door models  in three trims—TDI S, TDI SE, and TDI SEL. The Golf TDI S, featuring a six-speed manual gearbox, starts at $21,995, more than $3,000 lower than the previous-generation Golf TDI’s starting price.

Golf TSI models equipped with the new 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder engines have an estimated EPA fuel economy rating of 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway when equipped with the five-speed manual transmission, and 25/36 mpg with the six-speed automatic.

The 2015 e-Golf is Volkswagen’s first all-electric vehicle, which produces zero tailpipe emissions and requires zero trips to the pump. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently rated the 2015 e-Golf  at 126 city, 105 highway, and 116 combined Miles per Gallon of Gasoline Equivalent (MPGe), making the e-Golf the most efficient car in the compact EV class as determined by the EPA. Starting at $35,445 for the fully equipped SEL Premium mode, the e-Golf is currently available through participating Volkswagen dealerships in California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington D.C.
