End of the line for Pontiac
It was disappointing when General Motors announced that the storied Pontiac brand would be dropped. It hurt to see Oldsmobile, which dated back to 1897, be discontinued by GM early in this century. But the loss of Pontiac, which came under the GM umbrella in 1926, cuts even deeper. It will be remembered for its performance-oriented cars and its leadership during the muscle-car era in the late '50s and through the '60s. We wish GM had stuck to its original plan to make Pontiac a niche vehicle, to turn the nameplate back into a performance leader.
