The evolution of the steering wheel

(December 15, 2012) I’ve written several pieces on the technological evolution of the lowly steering wheel, mainly how it has become a repository for redundant audio controls and other functions that allow the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road but still be able to change stations, adjust temperatures in some cases or whathaveyou.

Triumph to be celebrated with special day March 3

(December 13, 2012) UNITED KINGDOM — The organizers of the International Triumph Show & Spares Day, sponsored by Heritage Classic Car Insurance, are planning on getting 2013 off to a celebratory start as it celebrates"triumphant Triumphs" when it returns to Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, on Sunday, March 3.

GM seeks trademarks on El Camino, Nomad

(December 11, 2012) Automotive News has reported that General Motors applied this year for trademarks on the names of its Chevrolet El Camino and Nomad with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office.

The automaker filed the El Camino application Aug. 9 and the Nomad application May 22, the blog GM Authority reported last week. But the automaker said it has no plans at this point to use the names on future models.

World's lowest car — the Flatmobile — sells at auction for $15,000

(December 11, 2012) Seems like a low price for such an unusual car, but the Flatmobile, just 19 inches tall, commanded only $15,000 at suction earlier this month in England. The Flatmobile, which Perry Watkins of Perrywinkle Customs built in 2007, started out as a 1963 Hillman Imp.

Gilmore Car Museum is featuring dust bowl display

(December 10, 2012) HICKORY CORNERS, Mich. — The Gilmore Car Museum is now offering an exhibition that looks at autos in the Dust Bowl era. The display at the Gilmore Car Museum coincides with the recent airing of PBS' two-part television series, "The Dust Bowl."

The film by Ken Burns features interviews with residents who lived through the Great Depression, drought and wind storms in the 1930s.

Most expensive Bentley wins Historic Car of the Year

(December 3, 2012) LONDON — The magnificent "Birkin" Bentley, which set a world record for a British car at auction when it sold for £5 million earlier this year, roared past its opposition to take the Car of the Year award at the 2012 International Historic Motoring Awards, in association with EFG International Private Banking and Octane magazine.

Original Batmobile to be auctioned in January

(December 1, 2012) The original Batmobile from the 1960s TV series Batman is being offered by its creator, the legendary customizer George Barris, at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale collector-car auction in January.

Barris has owned the famous Batmobile for nearly a half century, and this will be the first time the authentic TV car has ever been offered for sale.

Chrysler Group purchases museum's historic collection, displays

(November 30, 2012) AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — The Walter P. Chrysler Museum will write a new chapter as it merges with The Chrysler Foundation effective Dec. 31.

Subsequently, the museum's historic collection of 67 vehicles and displays will be purchased by Chrysler Group LLC, a move that will preserve the company's automotive heritage for future generations.

Vicari to offer special Chevelles at New Orleans auction Dec. 1

Europe's toughest classic car rally starts at Land's end Dec. 1
