A 'cool' and historic breakthrough for Packard

(November 29, 2014) One of the comforts most Americans take for granted while driving was displayed for the first time this month (Nov. 4) in 1939 at the 40th Automobile Show in Chicago.

The Packard Motor Car Company unveiled the first U.S. car with air-conditioning. The cooling and heating equipment in the Packard was located behind the rear seat in the trunk. Treated air reached the passenger compartment through ducts mounted between the seats and the rear window.

Photos of 1900 motor car run in England acquired by museum

(November 27, 2014) LONDON — The National Motor Museum Trust has acquired an important photographic album documenting the 1000 Mile Trial of 1900, a pivotal moment in motoring history which John Montagu, father of the current Lord Montagu, famously took part in.

This collection of photographs, which was purchased in the Bonhams London to Brighton sale on Oct. 31, covers the grueling run of early motor cars from London to Edinburgh and back by the event’s official photographer, Albert Argent Archer. This one-off event helped to change the public’s negative perception of motor cars at the turn of the century.

Mecum Kansas City auction to feature 750 American classic cars

Mecum Anaheim auction grosses $15.2 million; 1965 Ferrari tops list

(November 20, 2014) WALWORTH, Wis. — Reaching $15,238,429 in total sales, the 2014 Mecum Auction in Anaheim, Calif., claimed the title of top-grossing Mecum auction in that locale since the event’s inception in 2012. With 758 cars offered throughout the three-day event, Nov. 13-15, the top sale price was achieved by a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTB Short Nose that hammered at a strong $2.15 million.

Classic 1939 Buick that survived Pearl Harbor set for auction

(November 12, 2014) MARTINSVILLE, Va. — When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, naval officer Dee Venter worried that his new car would be among the victims. The 1939 Buick Model 46C was parked by the dock while Venter was away on the USS Pensacola, which had left six days earlier.

But against all odds, the attacks left the car unscathed, and it eventually returned to the United States. Now, owner A.C. Wilson, who is retired from the quarry business in Henry County, is preparing to sell the car in a Woltz & Associates auction Saturday, Dec. 6.

LA Auto Show plans showcase of classics, exotics and tuners
