Memories sparked for family as they prepare for Pebble Beach

(July 10, 2015) PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Richard "Dicky" Riegel III, a member of the duPont family, has a strong first memory of the only duPont Model H in existence. As he and friends emerged from their first grade classroom, his grinning father awaited him in the one-of-a-kind car.

"Dad's enthusiasm and love for cars was infectious," says Dicky. "Dad wasn't always a man of many words, but you wanted to be with him because you could sense how much he appreciated the vehicles he was around—which immediately sank into me. My early love of cars was inevitable, unavoidable."

'Ultimate' Land Rover Defender to be auctioned Aug. 29

(July 8, 2015) LONDON — Classic Car Auctions (CCA) will be offering the ‘ultimate’ Land Rover Defender in its auction at CarFest South on Aug. 29. When the 90 and 110 Land Rover models were launched in 1983 they revolutionized the model in terms of both road handling and off-road ability and paved the way for what would become known as the Defender.

Most desirable of the range was the V8 County Station Wagon, featuring 12 seats and the same 3.5 liter engine and gearbox as fitted to the Range Rover.  It also had improved interior trim plus the distinctive body stripes.

'Miami Vice' hero car speeds into Mecum Auctions Monterey

No, not Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs — the flashy detectives played by Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas who fought episode-after-episode against the seedy underworld of Miami — but their 1986 Ferrari Testarossa.

Classic car week takes hold of the Monterey Peninsula

The Bentley boys are back in town

(July 5, 2015) SILVERSTONE, England — This year’s 25th anniversary Silverstone Classic July 24-26 will celebrate its milestone Silver Jubilee with its widest-ever spectrum of glittering motor sport history.

At one end of the phenomenal panorama the introduction of F1 cars from the turbocharged Senna and Schumacher era brings the story almost up to date. The return of the evocative Pre-War Sports Cars meanwhile will take festival-goers much further back in time to an epoch when the famed Bentley Boys were victorious at Le Mans in the 1920s.

First Ferrari to race in California to return to Pebble Beach in August

(June 22, 2015) PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. — Hopes ran high for the 1949 Ferrari 166 Mille Miglia owned by Jim Kimberly when it pulled to the starting line of the 2nd annual Pebble Beach Road Races in 1951. It was the first Ferrari ever to race in California. Just a few weeks prior, it had triumphed over all of the competition in its first West Coast race in Palm Springs.

1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost 'woody' sells for $250,000

(June 23, 2015) LONDON — A 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost carrying ingenious painted "wood-effect" shooting brake coachwork from a car once owned by the future Edward VIII — one of the earliest "woodies" — burst through its £120,000 upper estimate to sell for £161,280 ($250,000) at H&H Classics’ June 20 auction.

The sale was held in conjunction with the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Annual Concours & Rally at Burghley House, Lincolnshire.

An ‘extraordinary’ car and a famous movie vehicle to be sold

(June 19, 2015) LONDON — Captain Nemo's six-wheeled Nautilus car from Sean Connery’s adventure movie The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen will be sold by international auctioneers Coys at their Blenheim Palace auction on July 11.

Designed by production designer and art director Carol Spier and one of only two made, this fully functional and complete vehicle was used throughout the film and features heavily on the promotional posters. Its twin was rigged with scaffolding for filming the actor's close-ups.

Sinkhole victim — One millionth Corvette restoration under way

(June 10, 2015) WARREN, Mich. — Craftspeople and technicians at the General Motors Design Center are painstakingly restoring the historic 1 millionth Chevrolet Corvette damaged nearly 16 months ago when a sinkhole opened beneath the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Ky.
