After a few years of slumping sales due to economic issues, consumer interest and sales of motorcycles are finally seeing gradual increases.  According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, year-to-date motorcycle sales are up 3.6 percent.

Second-quarter earnings, sales up for Harley-Davidson

(August 1, 2012) MILWAUKEE — Harley-Davidson today reported continued increases in earnings and dealer new motorcycle sales for the second quarter of 2012.

Income from continuing operations was $247.3 million, or $1.07 per share, on consolidated revenue of $1.73 billion for the quarter, compared to income from continuing operations of $190.6 million, or $0.81 per share, on consolidated revenue of $1.51 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Audi finalizes purchase of Ducati

(July 19, 2012) FRANKFURT — Audi says it completed the 860 million euro ($1.06 billion) purchase of Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A

Ducati, the maker of the Monster, Diavel and Superbike models, was acquired by Audi's Lamborghini sports car unit from Milan-based private-equity firm Investindustrial Advisors S.p.A. Deliveries last year totaled about 42,000 motorcycles, with revenue at 480 million euros.

Honda CRF25OR machine of choice for James Bond in newest 007 film

(July 17, 2012) Honda in the UK has announced its partnership with the upcoming James Bond film, Skyfall, and today unveiled the actual Honda machines used in the film, at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu.

Honda’s CRF250R motorcycle proved to be the machine of choice by the 007 film’s action vehicles and stunt crew teams. These motorbikes were modified for the opening sequence of the 23rd James Bond film which was shot in Istanbul and Adana, Turkey earlier this year.

Message is clear: Wear a helmet while riding

(July 12, 2012) SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. —Michigan recently released a sobering set of statistics, illuminating the importance of helmets for motorcyclists. The report, which draws on data from more than 700 motorcycle accidents, finds that failure to wear a helmet significantly increases the risk of fatality or serious injury — hardly a surprising statistic or a new conclusion, but one that has nevertheless reignited the debate over whether bike enthusiasts should be subject to "helmet laws."

BMW motorcycle sales down slightly, but company still expects record year

(July 9, 2012) MUNICH — BMW Motorrad sold 59,189 motorcycles worldwide in the first half of 2012, slightly below 2011 when 60,580 units were sold.

While motorcycle sales are slightly below the previous year for the first six months of 2012, BMW Motorrad is expecting significant growth in the second half of the year, thereby staying on course for a new sales record. One of the factors here is the high demand for the new maxi scooters BMW C 600 Sport and BMW C 650 GT which see their market launch in July.
