Ford Mustang EcoBoost High Performance — A rewarding experience

(June 22, 2022) A quick Mustang history lesson — The 2002 Ford Mustang V-8 came with 260 horsepower and 302 pound-feet of torque and could complete a 0-to-60 run in about 5.5 seconds. We bring these statistics up should you scoff two decades later at the 2.3-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder (called EcoBoost in Ford parlance) in the 2022 Mustang 2.3. A four cylinder in the newest version of Ford's muscle car? Hey, the EcoBoost 4 has a lot of muscle at its disposal, enough to leave the two-decade-old Mustang 5.0 in the dust.

Volvo C40 Recharge — Recharging for a price

(June 21, 2022) I’m at Trader Joe’s, parked next to a Volvo V70 wagon — and across from an older Tesla Model S. As the Tesla’s owner gets into his EV, he’s taking a long look at our C40 Recharge EV, Volvo’s first all-electric platform. And he takes another look, perhaps thinking it’s time to move on from his Tesla, perhaps thinking it’s time to move on from Tesla. And while Volvo’s all-new C40 Recharge isn’t intended as a replacement for the Model S, it can certainly be considered an alternative to Tesla’s Model 3 or Model Y crossover.

Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 4WD — Now the best Silverado ever

(June 14, 2022) I grew up in mid-east Michigan on a farm about 125 miles straight north of Detroit. Most families like mine were farmers or blue collar with most employment dominated by large auto factories and foundries, almost exclusively General Motors, surrounded on the outskirts by fertile farmland that mainly grew wheat, navy beans, alfalfa and sugar beets. In that part of the state pickup trucks were a hard-working tool and as much an elemental part of the landscape as grain trucks, tractors and combines.

Hyundai Elantra N — An aggressive compact sedan

(June 19, 2022) If you can't afford a BMW 3-Series, but want the ultimate driving machine experience, we have the answer for you. The 2022 Hyundai Elantra N offers BMW-like performance and handling at a smaller price starting under $34,000. And unlike the BMW, it comes with a 10-year, 100,000-mile drivetrain warranty. Is this a great country or what?

2022 Genesis GV70

HERNDON, Va. — The growth in size of today’s crossovers and SUVs is not unlike the growth in size of America’s collective waistline. (You know, we can’t all be a "perfect physical specimen.") Compact crossovers are quickly morphing into midsize crossovers, while those body-on-frame 3-rows — think Suburban or Ford’s Navigator — can’t realistically be garaged; they’re too long and too high. So, when you see a crossover that seems proportional to its mission, you want to jump on it. And over it. And around it.

BMW 230i — Driving fun in a small package

(June 12, 2022) The last five BMW vehicles we've tested all had the performance M in their name and two were actually full-throated M performance cars — the M4 Competition Coupe and the X3 M, both sporting 503 horsepower — so it might be surprising to learn we were blown away after driving the new-for-2022 230i coupe. That's the base 2-Series with a turbocharged 4-cylinder making — Yikes — just 255 horsepower. Never mind the rather paltry hp rating, we really liked the way the little coupe handled and performed. We could own one and be very happy heading out for wherever each day.

Jaguar’s F-Pace R-Dynamic S — Dynamic? Yes!

(June 6, 2022) It was in 1922 that what we now know as Jaguar was formed as the Swallow Sidecar Company, building motorcycle sidecars before offering bodies for passenger cars and, not too long after, the whole automotive shebang as S.S. Cars. Given that 2022, on some level, is Jaguar’s centennial, I reference Swallow because, for founder William Lyons, today’s all-consuming focus on the SUV — begun by Jaguar with the belated intro of its F-Pace compact crossover in 2015 — would be hard to, uh…swallow.

(June 6, 2022) The S-Class has long been the flagship vehicle for the Mercedes-Benz luxury lineup and a case can be made that it also sits at the top of its class in the auto world — period. U.S. News & World Report magazine, which doesn’t do original automotive reviews but bases its rankings on an analysis of critiques from several sources, rates the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class No. 1 among vehicles it classifies as “Super Luxury Cars.”

2022 Nissan Frontier

PHOENIX — For 16 years the Nisan Frontier has remained largely unchanged and in automotive speak a rolling fossil where new Oldsmobiles were still in dealer showrooms.  For reference, there wasn’t even such a thing as the iPhone. Yet while it was well past its freshness date the popular mid-size pickup still sold in respectable numbers. That’s not surprising, the old Frontier still looks good, it did most things extremely well and not everyone gets overly excited with the latest high tech and digital stuff they’ll never figure out how to use or even want to know.
