2018 BMW 530e

INDIANAPOLIS — BMWs conjure many images for many types of people — a luxurious four-door sedan with a power plug probably isn’t one of them. But, it is a reality with the 530e, a mid-size BMW with power and posh to spare…and fuel efficiency never before experienced. If it wasn’t for the “eDrive” logos on the C-pillars, and an extra door on the driver side front fender, you may never know there’s anything special about the 530e.

Toyota C-HR — Rescued from Scion

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

If you think the Toyota's new small crossover, the C-HR, is a bit too funky looking to wear the Toyota nameplate, there's a reason. The C-HR was designated for the Scion brand, but that plan had to be abandoned when Toyota terminated Scion last year.

Lincoln Navigator — New SUV luxury

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

It's been 10 years since Lincoln built an all-new Navigator so the 2018 model was long overdue. And it has been an instant hit. The new iteration puts Lincoln back in the game with such stalwart full-sized SUV players as BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Cadillac and Lexus. And it has definitely leveled the playing field when it comes to body-on-frame SUVs.

Mazda3 — A global success story

By David Finkelstein

Since Mazda introduced its first generation compact Mazda3 back in 2004, a success story has been written with motorists globally with 5 million units sold. The Mazda3 was co-developed with Ford in 2004, but now it's exclusive Mazda from bumper-to-bumper.

2018 Mercedes AMG GT R

PHOENIX — AMG, the high-performance speed shop for Mercedes, has been hammering out a steady stream of unrestrained, tire-shredding, asphalt-ripping street machines for more than 30 years. The GT R is its latest sports car. If you’re familiar with Germany’s Nurburgring (nickname Green Hell), it’s worth knowing that the GT R got around the track in a record 7 minutes and 10 seconds, which Mercedes claims is a record for rear-wheel-drive cars.

Buick Enclave — Second generation

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

It's been more than a decade since the Buick Enclave was introduced, a luxury-oriented near-full-size crossover that challenged competitors with a stylish design and a library-quiet interior. Since then Enclave has soldiered on with incremental improvements, updated software, and engine and transmission refinements.

Toyota Camry — A dramatic departure

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The Toyota Camry has been the most popular passenger vehicle in America for 18 of the past 20 years with a formula of unmatched reliability, excellent resale value and anonymous styling both inside and out, styling designed to offend no one. This has led the Camry to earn — whether deserved or not — the reputation of being an appliance, unflatteringly described as automotive wallpaper; with an unemotional feel, a car that takes you from point A to point B with no drama.

2018 Audi A5 Cabriolet

PHOENIX — The A5 is an attractive version of Audi’s A4 sedan and is available as a coupe, four-door Sportback, and a Cabriolet, tested here. The A5 Cabriolet is available in a choice of two trim levels: base ($49,600) and the performance-oriented S5 version ($62,300). Both trim levels are luxury drop tops with an attractive exterior and a formal interior. Both are well tailored with superb build quality, top rate materials — leathers, wood veneers and brushed aluminum or stainless steel trim — comprehensively engineered with impeccable attention to detail.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk — Supercharged fury

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk may be the most politically incorrect vehicle on the planet. It's the antithesis of the electric mobility craze that's sweeping the world's automobile manufacturers. The only range anxiety with this beast comes from the many stops it takes to keep the tank loaded with high octane gas.

2018 Audi A5 Sportback

INDIANAPOLIS — If it’s January, it’s time for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.  Arriving at the glitzy affair requires a comfortable car for the long drive, agile quick performance to get you there safely, and elegant style to set valets back on their heels.  It’s guaranteed to be snowy, so having all-wheel-drive is a big plus.  I couldn’t have picked a better traveling companion than the 2018 Audi A5 Sportback.
