(May 11, 2022) Mazda has loaded up its compact CUV segment entries with yet another vehicle just now reaching dealers, the CX-50. It joins the Mazda3 hatchback, CX-30 and CX-5 in the company's packed lineup. We haven't driven the 2023 CX-50, but it has been the recipient of some strong reviews. We do have considerable experience with the CX-30 and for 2022 we got another seven days behind the wheel of the CX-30 turbo, which we consider one of the best crossovers in a crowded segment.

2022 Mazda MX-30

HERNDON, Va. — It wasn’t long after Japanese automaker Mazda introduced itself to America that it reintroduced the rotary engine — initially known as the Wankel rotary — to that same American market. With fewer moving parts, an extremely compact package and an almost electric-like smoothness, the rotary was perfect for a family of compact coupes and sedans. But it was also thirsty, and Mazda’s timing — on the cusp of our first OPEC crisis — couldn’t have been worse.

(April 6, 2022) The Mazda Speed3 built from 2007 through 2013 was Mazda's answer to the hot hatch craze in the early part of the 21st Century offering competition to the Ford Focus ST, Dodge Caliber SRT-4, and Volkswagen Golf GTI. The final model came with a 2.3-liter turbocharged 4 making 263 horsepower and could accomplish a 0-to-60 run in just over 5 seconds. Those were the days — and Mazda has brought them back in the form of the Mazda3 2.5 Turbo, which was introduced last year.

Mazda CX-5 — Stylish and fun to drive

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(March 30, 2022) There is a reason the CX-5 is Mazda's best selling vehicle in the U.S. It's simply fun to drive with an outstanding balance of ride and handling, and it's elegantly styled inside and out with an exquisitely appointed interior — a compact crossover SUV that an owner is proud to show off to his friends and relatives.

Mazda CX-30 Turbo — Rewarding performance

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

(July 29, 2021) We proclaimed the Mazda CX-30 one of the best subcompact SUV crossovers on the market when we reviewed it for 2020. We wrote that while it looks like everything else in a Mazda showroom with clean lines, nice proportions and with a coupe-like silhouette, the CX-30 brings the sophistication of a more expensive car with a solid structure, an energetic engine, secure handling, a classy and quiet premium-looking interior, and a load of safety equipment.

Mazda CX-5 — A satisfying crossover experience

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

When shopping for a compact SUV crossover — and it seems about every other potential automobile buyer these days is looking for a vehicle in this segment — our strong recommendation is don't overlook the 2021 Mazda CX-5. If you've been inundated by advertising for more popular nameplates such as the Toyota RAV4 or the Honda CR-V and are leaning in that direction, you won't go wrong. Where you might go wrong is by not giving the excellent CX-5 a chance.

If you've decided that the 2021 Mazda CX-9 will be your next vehicle we have four words for you — Soul Red Crystal Metallic. That color may not be your first choice, but we can say from our time behind the wheel of a Red Crystal Signature trim CX-9 that the striking red used across the Mazda spectrum will garner many thumbs up. One admiring senior citizen said it reminded him of the Candy Apple Red of past decades.

Mazda3 AWD — Stylish and feature loaded

With a refinement above its class and sophisticated driving manners, the 2020 Mazda3 is one of the most satisfying mainstream compact cars on the road. Available as a hatchback or sedan, the Mazda3 is a viable alternative to rivals such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. For 2020 Mazda has added all-wheel drive as an option for just $800, and the previously optional engine — a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder — is now the standard powerplant across the lineup endowing all Mazda3's with a segment-topping 186 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque.
