We agree, the electric version is very fetching — a small crossover we would consider if dipping our toe into the electric pool — but the new performance-minded N version is the most fun. A hoot with 276 horsepower — 286 in an overboost mode — under the hood of a 3,340-pound car.

It has stylish proportions, it's easy and fun to drive, its gauges and switchgear work exactly like a standard gas engine vehicle, and perhaps at the top of the list — it gets 258 miles on a single charge.

(March 9, 2022) Remember back to the mid 80s when the Yugoslavian-built Yugo was hyped as the least expensive new car on the market? Why buy used, when a new car is within reach at a very affordable price, Yugo dealers argued. That turned out to be very bad advice because the Yugo proved unsafe and unreliable. A five-year-old Civic or Corolla were much better purchases at the same price — hugely more reliable and with a better trade-in value.

(January 30, 2022) The Hyundai Tucson compact crossover has been a perennial best seller for Hyundai, but it has encountered a difficult time making inroads against such rivals as the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4. That may change with the all-new fourth generation Tucson. The 2022 model is larger creating adult-sized passenger space in the second row, it has a striking new exterior design highlighted by a head-turning grille, and it gets significantly more gas mileage with two new hybrid variants.

(October 24, 2021) Our initial impression — it's a four-door 1970s Chevrolet El Camino. The idea back in those long-ago days was to take a mid-sized car and slam a bed on the back. It was popular at the time, and the El Camino can bring a lot of cash in restored condition today. In the case of the all-new 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz, attach a bed to the back of the new Tucson — and abracadabra you have a truck. But, Hyundai says, don't call it a truck even though it has all the makings of a smallish compact pickup with its miniature four-foot-four-inch bed.
