Fiat 500X — Functionality with personality

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The Fiat 500X small crossover was given a few nearly invisible styling tweaks for its 2019 model year freshening — a rather weak recipe for adding some new life to the cute little sub-compact that started life in the U.S. in 2016 on the Jeep Renegade platform. But wait, there's more.

2019 Fiat 500 Abarth

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — There was an outcry from some driving enthusiasts when Fiat decided to outfit the performance-oriented 500 Abarth with a six-speed automatic transmission for the 2015 model year. The Abarth, according to these enthusiasts, properly started life in 2012 with a five-speed manual transmission. The problem for Fiat — most people favor automatics these days and Fiat needed to listen to the masses for increased sales.

Fiat 124 Spider — Open-air thrills for under 30-grand

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

There's more roadster fun available at an affordable price than at any time in the last two-decades. You can still pay great gobs of cash for open-air nameplates from BMW, Mercedes and Nissan. But now, with the introduction of the Fiat 124 Spider to go head-to-head with the Mazda MX-5, those with budget limitations have another choice — a choice with pleasing Italian style — in picking an open-air thrill machine.

2017 Fiat 124 Spider

SAN DIEGO — This summer, nearly 50 years after the original Pininfarina-styled Fiat 124 Spider roadster launched in Turin, Italy, Fiat revives the legendary nameplate. The original Fiat 124 Spider came to the United States in 1968, and 170,000 were sold when it was discontinued in 1983. There are 8,000 still registered in the U.S. today and 40 percent of those are owned by millennials and Gen Xers.

Fiat 500X — Charming little crossover

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Fiat's newest entry in North America, the 500X — a sub-compact crossover — takes the best of the Fiat 500 design and molds it into a tiny people mover with a fun-to-drive personality offering a very comfortable and pleasing interior. It's practical and it gives the struggling brand a new lease on life in North America.

Fiat 500L — Cute becomes practical

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

We've spent time with two mini 2-door Fiat 500 models over the past two years and both times the 500 "won" us and others over; even those whose previous knowledge of Fiat was limited. We remember one person was so taken by the 500 that she proclaimed she'd buy one if they were just a little bigger. "If it just had more room," she lamented.

2014 Fiat 500L

BALTIMORE — We've spent time with two Fiat 500 models on home turf over the past two years and our usual small crowd of "what are you driving now?" folks were enthralled by the two-door mini hatchback, never having seen one or ridden in one. Both times the 500 "won" over people whose previous knowledge of Fiat was limited to "they aren't very good cars, are they?"

Fiat 500 Abarth — Small but wicked

By Jim Meachen and Al Vinikour

A well-worn adage is “good things come in small packages.” Perhaps with the 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth (pronounced ah-bart') that adage can be altered to "wicked things come in small packages." The odd moniker for the performance version of Fiat’s popular tiny world car comes from legendary racer Karl Abarth who is responsible for more than 10,000 individual race victories, 10 world records and 1,334 international titles.

Fiat 500 — It's amour

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

We could see purchasing a 2012 Fiat 500 just to be different, perhaps even envied in some circles. It has that cool factor that comes — rarely — with some new and much-anticipated or much ballyhooed vehicles such as the first New Beetle when it hit the streets more than a decade ago.

But more than that — and there has to be more than that to maintain a long-term relationship, at least long enough to pay off the loan — the Fiat 500 proved to be just downright fun to drive.
