BMW 640i Gran Turismo — Hatchback utility

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The 2018 BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo is a new 5-door hatchback, effectively the next generation 5 Series Gran Turismo. BMW in its zeal to add niche products to the lineup designed the Gran Turismo as a swoopy car-like crossover, but in fact it doesn't have the versatility of a crossover. It's more a sedan with a hatch. And, by the way, it's much better looking than the outgoing 5 Series.

2018 BMW 530e

INDIANAPOLIS — BMWs conjure many images for many types of people — a luxurious four-door sedan with a power plug probably isn’t one of them. But, it is a reality with the 530e, a mid-size BMW with power and posh to spare…and fuel efficiency never before experienced. If it wasn’t for the “eDrive” logos on the C-pillars, and an extra door on the driver side front fender, you may never know there’s anything special about the 530e.

MIAMII — BMW — which is much easier to remember than“Bayerische Motoren Werke” AG, or in English, “Bavarian Motor Works” — has championed the slogan “The  Ultimate Driving Machine” since the 1970s, and it doesn’t take a long time behind the wheel of just about any of its models to see that that is no idle boast. Though I haven’t had the opportunity to drive every one of its offerings, I have never been disappointed by the performance of any of those I have.

BMW i8 — Hybrid supercar

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The BMW i8 puts the company's advanced hybrid technology on public display in a drop-dead gorgeous supercar that has onlookers marveling at its beauty. The i8, indeed, puts a new and exotic spin on the hybrid vehicle with its swooping lines, protruding quarter panels, a buttress that forms behind the C-pillar, and the so-called scissor-wing doors that swing up and out from the A-pillars.

2017 BMW 5 Series

PHOENIX — For BMW enthusiasts, there’s no car more epochal than the 5 Series. It was first introduced by the German automaker in 1972 and is now in its seventh generation.  Called the G30 in BMW parlance (the original 1972 model was known as the E12), the mid-sized sports sedan has grown and is slightly longer, wider and taller than the previous F10 generation (2010-2016), yet sheds 137 pounds thanks to the extensive use of aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel.

2016 BMW 328i Sports Wagon

PHOENIX — Cars are an emotional choice, an expression of our personal style, likes and aspirations. As a working automotive journalist I’m first and foremost, an automotive geek. An automotive enthusiast. I honestly don’t know anyone who loves cars more than I do and for whatever reason I have always been completely addicted to station wagons.

2016 BMW M2

INDIANAPOLIS — The BMW M2 is a cute little nightmare. There’s something about it that makes you want to run up to hug it before running for the hills without even stopping to warn your village peeps. There’s both elegantly classic BMW styling and monstrous testosterone splashing from every pore. It sounds like a hot date, but is BMW’s gift to boys and girls who appreciate going fast with flair.

2015 BMW X5 Diesel

HOUSTON — The BMW X5 is the luxury SUV with the soul of a performance sedan. That was true when it first rolled out at the turn of the century, and it remains true today. It just so happens that it maintains its all-weather, all-capable, cargo-hauling soul as well. Powered by a diesel-fueled 6 cylinder engine, it also manages a highly respectable 27 mpg, making the X5 a luxury leader in every sense.

BMW X4 — A new definition of coupe

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

Luxury automakers have been answering a question that seemingly nobody had asked, pushing ahead with an incongruous design called the SUV crossover coupe. This is proof that you can call anything a coupe, even a high-riding fastback four-door hatchback. And it's further proof that in today's wacky world of automobiles you can call anything an SUV.

BMW M4 Convertible — A droptop with attitude

By Jim Meachen and Ted Biederman

The M4 replaces the M3 in the BMW lineup, with slightly increased size and sleeker styling, and it's definitely a worthy successor with potent twin-turbo inline six-cylinder power that effectively replaces the V8 (downsized to enhance gas mileage), and slot-car-like handling. BMW created the 4 Series for the 2014 model year and added the coupe and convertible M editions for 2015.
